Position Purpose:

This is an entry-level position and our ideal candidate aspires to advance to a Fleet Equipment Technician through our job progression model. This position will perform basic preventive maintenance to fleet vehicles and equipment. Transportation of PD vehicles from Sector Stations to City shops and outside vendors for maintenance, repair and warranty work.

Typical hours are 6:30 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday year-roundsome schedule variations may be considered within these parameters.

The hiring manager will verify hours and employment status. This position is health plan eligible.

Job Functions / Scope of Authority

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Confer with customers to determine maintenance needs of their vehicles.

Inspect vehicles to determine need for changing oils and filters and provide feedback to customers

Perform oil checks on transmissions and ensure that they are brought up to the required levels

Grease bearings, examine repairs and overhaul brake systems according to set standards

Locate and correct malfunctions such as wheel bearings issues and ignition problems by using dedicated electronic tools

Tune automobile engines to ensure that they function efficiently and handle repair and maintenance on service components including air conditioners and condensers

Remove and replace vehicle leaf springs, tail pipes and mufflers

Ascertain that tire pressure is properly maintained and handle tire rotation and installation duties

Clean and lubricate fittings and refill fluid levels

Handle battery replacement and recharging activities and ensure that old batteries are properly disposed off

Ascertain the general cleanliness and maintenance of tools and equipment used in vehicle maintenance work

Demonstrates a respectful attitude towards customers and coworkers that promotes teamwork, open communication, and effective customer service.

Acts with the customer in mind, responds to requests promptly and provides effective services or solutions for customers.

Exercises appropriate level of initiative and judgment to make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Solid knowledge of motor vehicles.

Basic computer skills.

High level of safety consciousness.

Ability to work in a law enforcement facility.

Ability to prioritize and organize time.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to read and understand SDS sheets on chemicals and fluids.

Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.

SCOPE OF AUTHORITY:

Receives supervision under the direction of the assistant fleet manager. Daily priorities are self-established. Expected to evaluate and respond to situations that demand immediate attention. Generally detailed procedures cover the majority of the work but often time’s decisions have to be made based on organizational policy and/or precedent.

Working Environment / Qualifications

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

The work environment/physical activities described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

Work is primarily performed in indoor environment with moderate to high noise levels. Physical effort and activities include: Works in confined, difficult to reach spaces with background noise and occasional adverse weather conditions. Requires strenuous physical work with heavy lifting, pushing or pulling of objects up to 70 pounds frequently and/or up to 122 pounds occasionally with second party assistance, and sustained bending.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE):

High school graduate or GED equivalent and one (1) year of automotive repair experience. A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

ASE Certification

Formal automotive training

Colorado commercial driver's license

Forklift operator’s license

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

Small hand tools.
