The Boeing Company is seeking an experienced Senior Rust Software Engineer (Virtual) and leader to join our advanced capabilities team. This position requires a deep understanding of safety-critical software development and verification, DevOps, and high-assurance processes. As a key technical leader on the team, you will work to establish Rust as a first-class development language for safety-critical and mission-critical applications across the Boeing Company. This includes the development of enterprise standards for deploying Rust with the appropriate level of rigor, as well as educating and supporting software teams in the deployment of Rust on specific projects. This position will require travel up to 10% of the time.

This position will have the option to be based out of anywhere in the United States and is not limited to:

Menlo Park CA, Berkeley MO, North Charleston SC, Huntington Beach CA, Seal Beach CA, Long Beach CA, El Segundo CA, Mesa AZ, Oklahoma City OK, Huntsville AL, Plano TX, San Antonio TX, Herndon VA, Colorado Springs CO, Ridley Park PA, Chicago IL.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Establish and own the implementation of Boeing enterprise standards for Rust development
  • Select the appropriate tools and infrastructure for implementing the above; guide their deployment across the organization
  • Develop educational materials and courses for new Rust developers
  • Provide guidance and support to teams and projects in adopting all of the above
  • Develop roadmaps that align to the broader vision of the organization
  • Collaborate with leadership team on strategy development
  • Provide clear written and spoken communication to a variety of audiences
  • Foster a culture that supports diversity and inclusion


This position has been identified as a virtual opportunity and does not require applicants to live in Mesa, Arizona.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "US Person" includes , lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 5+ years of experience with mission/safety-critical software development
  • 2+ years of experience with Rust development, across the complete development lifecycle
  • Experience coaching and/or mentoring engineers that develop system requirements and design


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • Development experience involving hardware and software integration
  • Experience with Product-Line Engineering
  • Experience with Continuous Integration (CI) / Continuous Deployment (CD) pipelines
  • Experience with Unix/Linux systems
  • Experience with Docker container deployment


Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range min-max: $150,000 - $210,000
