Payroll Specialist (Anchorage)

The Payroll Specialist performs payroll accounting functions including reviewing and processing timecards, preparing disbursements, mileage and other payroll related record keeping. This position provides assistance to, and receives direction from, the Senior Payroll Specialist.

Responsibilities

1. Receives, processes, and quality assures timecards, mileage logs, demand checks, and separation of employment paperwork; matches vacation/sick leave taken to timecards.

2. Verifies timecards for quantity and type of hours worked and obtains approval from appropriate personnel for adjustment of miscellaneous time entries. Inputs paper timecards into computerized payroll system, as required.

3. Updates payroll system with updated information on employee specific setup such as direct deposit, W-4 tax information, and garnishment on wages, as required.

4. Determines dates for payroll and related tax deposits to be paid and ensures timely payment.

5. Runs, verifies, and maintains appropriate reports including payroll, disbursement, 403(b) retirement, child support and garnishment, and vacation/sick leave status reports and journals.

6. Reconciles employee benefits related deductions and reports discrepancies. Tracks employee arrearages for deductions owed due to insufficient paycheck funds.

7. Maintains alphabetic and electronic payroll related filing systems.

Experience

Education

•Associate degree in Accounting or related field required. Experience in lieu of education may be accepted on a two for one basis in appropriate fields.

Experience

•Two years of experience in payroll preparation in a facility with at least a 250-person payroll required

Other

•Work a flexible schedule as needed for events

•Ability to lift 25 lbs. from a squat-and-kneel position

•Possess a valid Alaska driver license and proof of insurance

•Provide driving record that meets agency guidelines

•Pass a criminal background check under state regulation
