General Functions
Responsible for the financial accounting and reporting for Cook Inlet Housing Authority and other subsidiaries or companies, as assigned, ensuring transactions are processed timely and accurately in accordance with company policies and procedures. Primary emphasis will be in performing accounting functions such as preparing general ledger and subsidiary ledger reconciliations, preparation of journal entries to record activity, cash management, annual audit preparation and coordination, bank and investment reconciliations. This is a temporary position and will be assigned duties as needed to include, but not limited to providing support to the grant accounting, fixed assets and general accounting functions.
Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)
Reconcile general ledger accounts
Reconcile bank statements
Accurately process and record financial activity relating to CIHA or its subsidiaries
Assist in cash management
Assist in inter-company processes
Reconcile external accounting reports for 3rd party managed commercial properties and prepares entries for monthly activity
Prepare various schedules (including insurance, cost amortizations and mortgage summaries) and reconciles them to general ledger
Assist grant accountant in the preparation of reconciliations and journal entries relating to grants
Assist fixed asset accountant in the preparation of reconciliations and journal entries relating to fixed assets
Prepare or assist in the preparation of various financial reports
Gather and prepare work papers to complete the CIHA month-end close folder
Assist in annual financial audit for CIHA and rental properties
Complete special projects and other related duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles with emphasis in governmental accounting principles including accounting for fixed assets and federal/state grants
Strong analytical skills
Computer skills with emphasis in spreadsheets, word, and accounting software
Strong organizational skills
Ability to work effectively with department management and staff
Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with a particular emphasis on the presentation of financial material
Ability to work independently to accomplish assigned tasks
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Finance with an emphasis in Accounting or equivalent experience.
Five years progressive experience in accounting functions and in the utilization of accounting software
Experience in cost allocations and job costing
Great Plains software experience a plus
