JOB TYPE: Full Time
SALARY: 24k – 36k annually plus tips
LOCATION: VFW Post 9365, Wasilla, AK
RESPONSIBLE FOR: Self; Bar Staff
RESPONSIBLE TO: The House Committee, Quartermaster, Commander
What Does a Bar Manager Do?
Bar Managers ensure the bar is running smoothly at all times by overseeing its day-to-day operations. It’s the Bar Manager’s responsibility to maintain a safe and fun environment for customers. Bar Managers maintain liquor licensing and ensure that staff is following local and state requirements and proper alcohol distribution regulations. They’re often in charge of hiring and training bar employees, building schedules to ensure there are enough people working at the bar during its peak hours, managing and resolving customer and staff complaints, and ensuring the bar’s inventory is well-stocked.
Bar Manager Skills and Qualifications
Bar Managers will need certain prerequisite skills and experience, which include:
Communication: Bar Managers will need both written and verbal communication skills. Written communication skills will assist the Bar Manager with understanding directions from the governing body. Verbal communication skills are crucial as Bar Managers will need to develop working relationships with employees, customers, vendors, other businesses, and other management.
Problem-solving: It is the role of the Bar Manager to diffuse conflict within the bar. This requires developed problem-solving skills that allow the bar manager to effectively handle conflict in a way that works for both the customer and the staff.
Leadership: Leadership skills will assist the Bar Manager in effectively leading their bar staff in a way that is productive and organized.
Organizational: Bar Managers oversee many different aspects of the business including hiring, promoting, training, scheduling, and managing, so strong organizational skills are necessary.
Bar Managers Duties and Responsibilities
Set objectives and targets for bar
Determine staff needs and recruit staff
Performance manage staff
Assess development needs and train and coach staff
Delegate duties and tasks to staff to meet objectives and maximize resources
Set and monitor quality and service standards for staff
Communicate post policy, standards, and procedures to staff
Direct and manage staff members to meet standards and objectives
Ensure staff operate within post policies
Organize and adjust staff rotations and schedules in accordance with available resources and labor regulations
Oversee the preparation and presentation of beverages to meet set standards
Resolve customer complaints promptly
Monitor cleanliness and hygiene of bar area
Promote and practice compliance with fire, health, safety and hygiene standards and regulations with staff
Oversee accurate cash-up procedures and ensure necessary paperwork is complete
Ensure adherence to cash management procedures
Ensure adherence to stock control procedures
Monitor and order supplies
Liaise with suppliers and sales representatives
Confirm that procurement of supplies is on the best possible terms
Make certain all deliveries are checked in correctly and documentation is correct
Check stock is correctly rotated and stored to reduce wastage
Oversee the bar display to maximize functionality and attractiveness
Set, monitor, and control budget for the beverage bar
Plan and implement cost control measures
Plan and implement systems to maximize sales and revenue
Organize promotional activities
Generate and present financial reports to the governing body
Implement improvements for products and service
Maintain regular communication with staff and the governing body through meetings and discussions
Stay current with relevant legislation regarding service of alcohol and licensing
Other duties as assigned
Work Hours & Benefits
Currently we do not provide any benefits for this position. Time off would be unpaid for this position. The schedule we are looking to fill is a Monday through Friday schedule from 10:00am to 4:30pm. As a bar manager you may have to cover other shifts or work events that require you to work weekends. While working in a bartender capacity you would be entitled to tips as extra monetary compensation.
Education, Experience, & Licensing Requirements
High school diploma or GED.
Valid Driver’s License
Bartender’s license (TAP Certification)
Prior experience working in a bar or restaurant
Supervisory experience
Familiarity with point-of-sale tracking technology and bar and restaurant management platforms
