Job Overview

In conjunction with the pastors, lay leaders and youth from the congregations, the Youth Worker will plan and build a joint congregation program that will give our youth more opportunities to grow in faith, connect with others in healthy ways and engage in service. This will be done with sensitivity to the importance of traditional Alaska Native culture.

Responsibilities and Duties

-Reach out to the families of the youth in the joint congregations, plan a monthly joint congregational youth event, and attend Sunday worship at the churches as possible. By the 2nd year, work up to at least 4 joint congregational events a month (bible study, leadership development, fellowship and service opportunities)

-Participate in conversation with pastors and leaders of the congregations to develop a youth ministry plan for the churches. Follow the plan.

-Engage in training for youth ministry as provided for by the congregations.

-Keep accurate records of: all who attended youth events, volunteers who have passed a background check, a calendar of past and planned events with the youth (both cross-generational and youth-only events), contact information for new visitors that are youth, up-to date-contact information for all youth members of the congregation and their families.

-Know the names of all the youth who are members of the congregations as well as the names of their family members. Have one-on-one conversations with the youth as to what events/activities are meaningful to them.

-Recruit, train and support volunteers for youth activities.

-Provide a youth calendar of events to pastors, parents of youth and youth.

-Continue to get to know the youth and their families and as time allows, attend family, school and community events when invited by the youth or their families.

Qualifications

-Familiarity with Alaska Native/Native culture required.

-Driver's license and safe driving record required

-Bachelor degree preferred. Experience working with youth preferred.

-Relates well with teens and their families, a heart for youth ministry, sincere Christian faith, comfortable with Lutheran theology.

-Youth ministry training or certification preferred.

-Ability to physically participate in activities with the youth.

-Special Talents and Skills Preferred: Recruitment, leadership, equipping, delegating, organization, administration.

Time Commitment: 20 hours/week, 2 weeks paid vacation

Time off policy: On occasions (for example youth trips, Bible camp, out of town youth gatherings) when the youth worker is required to work on days that would normally be part of their weekly days off, the day off shall be observed on another day within two weeks after or one week prior to the originally scheduled day off.

Salary Range: 23,000 - 25,000 per year depending on training and experience

Resources and Training Provided: Additional money will be provided for continuing education and/or certification for youth ministry and the annual Safe Sanctuaries training or Boundaries Training offered by the Alaska Synod.
