Scientist-Little Port Walter Research Station
Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Scientist to provide support to the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) West Coast Region,Little Port Walter (LPW) Research Station on Baranof Island. OAI supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species.
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) conducts research at the Little Port Walter (LPW) Research Station on Baranof Island on a wide variety of topics relating to the health of our endangered and sustainable fish and fisheries including: the effects of hatchery-propagated fish on wild fish; the effects of genetic bottlenecks on productivity of fish populations; the utility of freshwater sanctuaries for long term survival of anadromous fish. Additionally, NMFS monitors annual biological and climate data collected at LPW research station to study the effects of climate change on ocean migration, growth, condition, and survival of salmon along with culturing commercially important aquaculture species.
DUTIES
The Individual shall provide the following services:
Data Summarization. The individual shall assist in data compilation, summarization, analysis, literature review, and preparation of reports that relate long-term trends in salmon survival, productivity, age structure, and physical characteristics to information on ocean conditions and climate to improve modeling of ecosystem trends, including estimates of North Pacific Management Council groundfish recruitment time series, reports assessing potential impacts of shifts in ocean conditions and climate change on system productivity and ecosystem management.
Field Research. The individual shall assist in the planning and execution of research related to the distribution and migratory patterns of salmonids in the marine environment, including the preparation of equipment specifications, planning and execution of field operations and logistics, data collection, data summarization, and preparation of reports.
General Fish Culture and Rearing.
Wet laboratory/ Incubation: The individual shall be required to install and maintain water alarm systems; maintain water flows in chilled and recirculation incubation systems; track temperature unit (TU's) during incubation; keep incubation trays clean; remove dead eggs and alevins, and treat with fungicide as needed; use hand sorting and mechanical methods to periodically estimate numbers of live/dead eggs in experimental lots. Maintain integrity of individual egg lots for disease and experimental purposes. Organize, setup, and participate in the transfer of alevins at the proper development stage by calculating percent yolk absorption in the alevins. Record and summarize research results and assist in reporting information.
Maintenance: The Field Research Leader II shall be required to maintain culture units, water systems, including chilled, recirculated fresh and salt water systems. These systems include fresh and saltwater waterlines, pumps and delivery manifolds and filtering systems. The Contractor shall assist the resident NMFS Research Laboratory Mechanic in the general maintenance of the facility including: fuel storage, fuel transfer, handling, operation and maintenance of diesel generators, heating systems, diesel incinerator, snow removal, and general cleaning. The individual may also operate a Government vehicle, small tractor, forklift, excavator, compressor, hand and power tools for construction and maintenance and a pressure washer to clean nets and rearing containers.
Environmental Monitoring.
The contractor shall provide temporary assistance as needed on other collaborative EMA ProgramProjects.
Other Duties Include:
Monthly Report summarizing activities.
Monthly Report summarizing field research activities.
Participate in weekday meetings with Project Leader and other NOAA staff to update and coordinate the outlined tasks.
Furnish a written report on a monthly basis for all tasks currently being performed. Reports shall be provided to the NMFS Project Leader with a copy to the COR. This can be provided in paper copy or via email to the appropriate persons. The report shall address the work completed to date, percent of completion of the task, work forecast for the following reporting period, and information, issues, problems, etc., of interest.
All data collected during these tasks shall be the property of the U.S. Government and will be provided to the ABL at the end of each field season. Finalized data are to be delivered to ABL EMA Program, and entered and edited in the provided ProjectDatabase.
A daily log of activities shall be required.
Quarterly reports summarizing environmental monitoring data by daily, weekly, and monthly averages shall be required.
Data summaries (Excel spreadsheets) and annual reports related to LPW research(Word document) are to be provided at the end of the field season.
All data and photographs taken during field operations are the property of NMFS and permission for any use is required. All equipment provided by NMFS is to be returned in good working order.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Selected individual(s) must have the following minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in fisheries or related biological field with two (2) years field experience in fisheries or biology.
Additional required qualifications include:
Must be a U.S.citizen.
Must have experience working with salmonids.
Must be able to work effectively as a member of a research team.
Must be able to work independently, and have good communication and problem solving skills.
Must be able to follow detailed verbal and written instructions and data protocols.
Must be able to routinely produce work results that are accurate and reliable.
Must have a working knowledge of personal computers, and be proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, and relational databases.
Must have experience operating small boats in saltwater.
Must have the physical ability to lift 40 pound loads multiple times throughout a workday.
Current 1st Aid / CPR certified.
Additional preferred qualifications include:
Experience working with salmon aquaculture.
Experience tagging animals with external tags, CWTs, and acoustic transmitters.
Experience using acoustic telemetry to track the movements of aquatic animals.
Field experience or living experiences in remote, isolated settings with harsh environments conditions including cold temperature, snow, and frequent rain.
Field experience or living experience in remote, isolated settings with harsh environment conditions in Alaska.
Experience summarizing data and report writing.
Experience with statistical analysis and statistical software (e.g., R, Matlab).
Experience with data mapping software (e.g.,ArcMap).
