Job Summary:

HDL Engineering Consultants, LLC (HDL) is a leader in providing surveying, design and construction services in Alaska. We are looking for a motivated, goal, and detail oriented person to fill a full-time Senior Land Surveyor position.

Our survey group is led by Professional Land Surveyors and Certified Federal Surveyors with many years of experience in providing surveying and mapping for a wide variety of projects within Alaska. This position is an excellent opportunity to work alongside some of the best surveyors in the state, with our innovative and well-equipped team known for quality work and client satisfaction.

The Senior Land Surveyor position will be responsible for managing projects and clients along with the senior management team. Duties include organizing projects, directing field survey crews, occasionally operating survey instruments and collecting information in the field; performing field quality control, performing office reductions, all types of survey computations; preparing TINs and surfaces, and final mapping in an AutoCAD Civil 3D environment. This position is primarily an office position, but it may include infrequent field work.

Required Job Qualifications:

A combination of ten (10) years education and/or surveying and mapping experience

Current Professional Land Surveyor registration for the State of Alaska (Professional Land Surveyor registration in another state with commitment to obtain Alaska Registration within 12 months may be considered if the applicant meets the education and experience requirements for an Alaska PLS)

Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and GPS processing software

Demonstrated experience by a large variety of field note samples and drawing samples

Valid Alaska Drivers License and a clean driving record

Must be able and willing to travel within Alaska (infrequently)

Physical Fitness with the ability to work efficiently in steep terrain

Desired Job Qualifications:

Municipal, State of Alaska, and Federal work experience

A minimum of five (5) years of experience working in remote areas of Alaska is desired

Experience with performing and submitting Aeronautical Surveys to FAA requirements

Well rounded skill set and wide ranging experience with a focus on Alaska projects, or projects similar to those typically found across Alaska.

Experience with Leica survey equipment and software

Certified Federal Surveyor (CFedS)

Microstation V8I Experience a plus

Essential Job Functions:

Project management skills, including assessing project scope, assisting the Survey Manager or other HDL project managers in developing budgets and estimates, collaborating with other senior land surveyors on project organization and coordination of workflow, mentoring office and field staff.

Organizing for field work, monitoring ongoing field work, reviewing field work, assigning or processing field data, assigning or performing mapping in Civil 3D.

Work in the office or field on control, boundary, subdivision, topographic & design surveys, aerial mapping control and aeronautical surveys; may also perform hydrographic surveying.

When required, accurately run and adjust survey measuring instruments including digital levels, GPS equipment, and total stations with electronic data collecting capabilities.

Take accurate and clear field notes and sketches.

Understand and identify sources of measurement errors

Perform mathematical calculations and check field data in the field.

Perform data reduction, field note reduction, calculations, data checks and staking computations using survey programs and AutoCAD .

Perform quality control checks on each project, including computations, field book formats and content.

Survey report writing describing horizontal and vertical control basis, the survey processes used for the project that meet the clients standards, and the quality control processes used to provide quality assurance

Excellent working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D with significant experience in producing quality survey drawings of many types with a minimum of supervision

Must be proficient in the use of total stations, GPS receivers and data collectors, GPS reduction software such as Leica Geo Office.

Knowledge of principles of monumentation, staking and marking

Right-of-way mapping and parcel plat drafting a plus

Hydrographic surveying experience a plus

Work Environment

This position involves both field work and office work. When working in an office setting, this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc. When working in the field, this position may be required to stand for long periods of time and walk long distances. This position may also be required to occasionally climb, kneel or crouch, and reach with hands and arms. This position also may be required to lift items and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds, and use a jackhammer similar to a Pionjar or Cobra Combi Breaker/Drill for long periods of time, and work in various types of inclement weather typically found across Alaska.
