Scientist-Kodiak Aquaculture Research

Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Scientist to support the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). OAI supplies personnel support on contract to government and industry clients for technical, administrative, managerial, and organizational services.

The goal of NOAA Fisheries scientists collaborating on this project are to facilitate kelp seed production, build infrastructure to monitor ocean conditions that inform the potential for mariculture operations, and develop a research plan to support the future of kelp mariculture in Alaska. The AFSC Kodiak Laboratory has a seawater laboratory and instrumentation to measure water quality associated with alkalinity, carbonate, temperature, salinity, and primary productivity. The AFSC Kodiak lab also has instrumentation to measure basic water quality parameters in the field. Data on water quality must be collected on a regular basis in the laboratory and in the field at Kodiak Island village sites to support kelp aquaculture research. In addition, research needs to be conducted to determine ideal environmental conditions for macroalgae growth. A contractor is required by AFSC who can perform these tasks.

Travel is anticipated.

Salary and Benefits: This is a part- time position with excellent employee benefits. Salary commensurate with experience.

DUTIES

Conduct laboratory work running a Burkolator carbonate chemistry instrument and accompanied instruments measuring temperature, salinity, and production.

Develop a field collection system that supports a spatial component to seawater quality in the Kodiak Archipelago.Data will be collected at multiple point sources (Kodiak Island villages) to develop a regional model and data will be collected at the scale of macroalgae farms to identify spatial and temporal variability.

Other Duties

Manage and analyze data on seawater chemistry providing a database and monthly reports on hourly and monthly trends in seawater chemistry.

The deliverable is provision and oversight of environmental monitoring instruments to remote sites, regular collection of the data, and incorporation of these data into monthly reports on spatial and temporal trends.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Selected individual(s) must have the following minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university with a major directly related in a field of study as related to the requirements of specific task order with emphasis in fisheries, oceanography, social science, natural science, mathematics, or hydrology, plus three (3) years of experience in related field or combination of such totaling seven (7) years combined education and experience. Masters Degree may be substituted for experience.

Additional required qualifications include:

1 year of laboratory experience that includes troubleshooting analytical instrumentation.

Experience with review, validation, and certification of data collected from analytical instrumentation.

Preferred qualifications include:

Experience collecting water samples at various depths.

Experience with entering data in a database and performing basic analyses.

Hazmat Air Shipping Certification (IATA)
