Job Description for Deckhand position (assistant) at Kenai River and Kasilof River

Must be resident of Kenai/Soldotna or Anchorage, Alaska. No out of state please. Must meet in person for interviewing.

Qualifications: Highly skilled in "hands on" experience with fishing tackle and bait. Know Alaskan rules of the Kenai River and fishing updates. Inexperienced welcome: Will train while working. Familiarity with American Sign Language (ASL) 1, 2 or 3 or will teach ASL while working. Familiarity with basic deaf culture to communicate with Deaf professional guide. Desired personal interaction with clients. Must be high energy, in excellent physical condition, highly motivated to work long hours, be early riser, willing to work a minimum of 7 to 14 hours per half/full day in all weather conditions, enjoy the outdoors and still be smiling at the end of the day.

Responsibilities: Excellent communication skills with clients. Able to interact and give fishing instructions, safety rules and clarify manner of payment, and communicate directions to clients and assist clients as needed in landing fish, prepare set up and loading and unloading of fishing equipment to riverboat each morning and evening. Must fill gas tanks (and know safety rules), prepare Qwikfish plugs/lures. Know how to fillet bait, cut, attach to plug and wrap with invisible thread, sharpen hooks, and keep equipment in sterile condition. Hose down fish-cleaning table between trips and at end of day hose down riverboat. Communicate with other guides on cell phone regarding fishing information and correspond with booking agent regarding reservations or changes. Cell phone is required at all times.

Preferred: Room and Board: Room, board, and transportation are responsibility of the deckhand. We will provide room if needed.

Work Schedule: Must be on board: May 15th to September 30th. Hours are approximately 7 to 14 hours per day from 5 am until 7 pm (depends on booking: half day or full day).

Location and Vehicle: Reliable transportation is a must as Kenai is rural, has no bus service and is 3 hours drive south of Anchorage and is the largest city in Alaska.

Salary: No ASL experience: $55.00 per trip. ASL 1, 2, 3 or above: $60.00 per trip plus tips usually average $10.00 + per client or average $30 to $60 per trip but are dependent upon your performance and interaction with clients. Maximum clients per day is 8 and usually 1 or 2 trips per day based on bookings. Average per summer: $8,000 to $9,000 +
