Part-time farm worker needed
Hours per week: 15-20 (high end estimate)
Starting wage first year: $15 per hour
Requirements: Able bodied and willing to do physical labor, follow directions precisely, show up
when scheduled to work, and work diligently. No cell phone use during work hours except on break.
This includes texting. Work for the entire season through September. No farm
experience necessary but experience doing physical labor and gardening or farm work is preferred. No
smoking or use of tobacco products because of the Tomato Mosaic virus which can be present in
tobacco products and transmitted by hands or feet to plants (tomatoes, cucumbers) and soil. Pre-hire
interview with references and work history required before starting work.
Work would/may include: spreading compost with a shovel and wheelbarrow, weeding with ergonomic
tools (standing position), harvesting vegetables, washing and packing vegetable for farmers market,
setting up and moving light weight irrigation lines, possibly pruning tomatoes and cucumbers in a
green house. Harvesting and preparing vegetables for market would occur once or twice a week and be
the majority of work from June through September.
My background: I am recently retired from State of Alaska. I have a B.S. in Agronomy and M.S. in
Plant Genetics and Breeding from University of California, Davis. My farm experience includes four
years work on an organic farm and selling my own greenhouse vegetables for two years. My farm is
three acres in size and will be intensively planted and harvested following a market garden farm model
(e.g. Jean Martin Fortier, Elliot Coleman). I have two greenhouses, a transplant greenhouse 30 x 48 feet
and a tomato and cucumber greenhouse 30 x 60 ft. Both have heaters and controlled ventilation. Farm
fields would be about 1/3 acre for the initial season. Work hours may be variable until the harvest
season begins and work settles into a routine of harvesting and preparing vegetable for market. I am
seeking naturally grown certification so all products used on the farm (e.g. soap spray for aphids) will be OMRI
approved and listed products. Farm is located 20 minute drive out on Funny River Rd.
