The Center for Digital Health is responsible for driving Mayos consumer facing digital experience vision. The CDH Consumer Product Architecture will comprise of several product portfolios focused on serving one or many of our consumers including Patients, physicians, educators, donors, researchers, administrators, caregivers, and partners and provide supporting capabilities to meet the needs of all organizational stakeholders and establish an environment of continuous improvement with high levels of proficiency.


Mayo Clinic is seeking is seeking an experienced IT Division Chair (Senior Director of Engineering) to serve as the leader for new digital product and services engineering and software development. As IT Division Chair of Digital Products and Services, you will inspire, lead, and grow an organization of creative and talented software and data engineering professionals. You have delivered one or more complex software products to market. You are the quintessential player-coach type of technical leader who is passionate about mentoring and developing our engineering talent. Youll bring your operational leadership, technical expertise, and proven people development skills to bear on strategic decisions about our technical ecosystem, product roadmap, and engineering culture. You will bring deep expertise in implementing development processes to drive team execution and meet business goals. You will be a key member of the Product and IT leadership team.

  • Work closely with the Product Owners, Product Managers, Software and Data Engineers to design, build, and operate continuous product delivery using a DevSecOps model

  • Works closely with the CTO and the Office of the Chief Technology Officer in defining key aspects of Enterprise architecture, technology, innovation, and systems of integration

  • Defines appropriate technology and workflow for product and software implementation in Mayo Clinic Cloud based on Google Google Cloud Platform technologies.

  • Ensure digital product delivery for key Mayo business functions that leverages Enterprise services for IT Operations and Security Operations for 24x7x365 product support

  • Communicate effectively with peers, leaders, executives and customers throughout the organization.

  • Effectively build, develop, and retain a strong engineering talent pool that will need to adjust to product demand and expectations

  • Promote the adoption of best practices and insuring consistent software delivery

  • Provide and receive feedback, builds morale and group commitments to goals and objectives.

  • Provide estimates covering large, complex technical initiatives

  • Successfully communicate concepts and guidelines to development team

What you'll be doing

  • Build and lead an engineering team. Including all day-to-day operations, long-term strategy and growth plans, budgeting, hiring/retaining/growing your managers, set performance goals and ensure that the team accomplishes them

  • Contribute to the executive team, guiding strategic decisions and resource allocation across the whole company.

  • Define Engineering strategies and ensure that processes meet the evolving needs of the business

  • Determine OKRs, project planning, budgeting and resource requirements to accomplish projects and support our growing user base

  • Manage engineering morale, retention, culture, and performance, by facilitating team outings, online gatherings, career growth opportunities, and psychological safety

  • Provide professional development, coaching, mentorship, and cultivate emerging leaders for the organization

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Masters degree with 8 years of experience, which includes 4 years of demonstrated leadership

  • Have in-depth knowledge of software and data engineering with a minimum of 5+ yrs. of experience coding applications or services in a high-level language (C, C, Golang, Java, C# etc.) and a basic knowledge of related fields including data related development.

  • Experience with modern application development frameworks

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, containerization, and operations.

  • Deep hands-on technical expertise, excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience with Agile software development techniques and tools.

Authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now, or in the future (for example, =, national, or permanent resident, refugee, or asylee).


  • 10+ years of total technical experience including experience architecting consumer facing products, hosted in a cloud environment (Google Cloud Platform, AWS or Azure), supported by micro-services and restful APIs.

  • Experience and background in enterprise software and delivery and representing the engineering function at the highest level of the business.

  • Successfully managed and scaled Engineering team during growth periods

  • Experience with building and leading a distributed engineering team

  • Master's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field.

  • Ability to use a wide variety of open-source technologies and cloud-based services.

  • Experience writing software for the cloud (Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure).

  • Experience architecting high-performance, highly available and scalable distributed systems.
