We are seeking a Lead Finisher with a deep well of experience in high-end custom cabinetry. This position requires a mastery of stain and color matching. It requires a hands-on leader who understands the art and science of fine finishing, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and has the organizational discipline to manage both materials and people effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform expert stain and color matching using designer samples or in-house-created samples.
- Efficiently manage sample preparation and color archiving processes.
- Operate and maintain air-assisted airless pumps and spray booth equipment.
- Oversee product rotation and catalogue finish product lifespan to minimize overage and waste.
- Utilize the mixing station to accurately prepare quart and gallon quantities.
- Estimate square footage of jobs to order the correct amount of finishing materials.
- Track, manage, and report material usage, overages, and shortages to the Production Manager.
- Ensure all finishing work meets production deadlines and communicate proactively if delays arise.
- Maintain strict quality control standards across all finish room output.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Work closely with other team leads to ensure smooth cross-department collaboration.
- Continuously improve finish shop processes for greater efficiency and quality.
- Mentor and lead finishing team members; provide coaching and hands-on training where needed.
- Be an active, front-line leader—spending roughly 75% of the day hands-on in the finish room, and 25% on administrative tasks.
Administrative & Technical Skills
- Accurately catalogue colors, stains, and product data.
- Use Builder Trend software to manage active jobs, track progress, and submit daily updates.
- Conduct email communication and product ordering via computer.
- Maintain records for finish materials and job-specific product requirements.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in custom cabinet finishing, including color matching and finish systems.
- Familiarity with finish equipment, spray techniques, and material safety.
- Ability to lead, train, and inspire a small crew with high standards and integrity.
- Strong computer literacy and experience with job tracking software (Builder Trend preferred).
- Reliable, flexible, and able to shift priorities without losing focus or quality.
- Must be coach-able, organized, and aligned with company goals and craftsmanship standards.
