Senior Scientist - Particle Acceleration

Vacancy expired!

The Senior Scientist is an innovator, a collaborative expert, a leader, and a partner to the Principal Investigator(s).Together, they will focus on taking Raytheon forward by providing innovative contributions and novel concepts in directed energy (DE) applications, focusing on concepts and principles of particle accelerator technology to design, prototype, test, and design for manufacturing to pioneer, demonstrate, simulate, and test the performance/impacts of novel designs for national defense applications. The Sr. Scientist will develop novel approaches and propose solutions to meet overall program and device performance objectives. The Sr. Scientist will have demonstrated, successful, expert experience in the physics and technology of particle accelerator and beam systems, nuclear physics, and radiation-producing devices and detectors.Experience in plasma physics is a plus. The successful candidate will be an expert, a leader, and a mentor who works effectively in a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented research and manufacturing environment. This role will required to both perform and facilitate modeling, simulation and analysis, and develop designs, fabricate and test prototypes, and interact across various departments to lead the integration of subsystems into larger directed energy systems in particle accelerator technologies. The Sr. Scientist will originate and innovative novel technologies, write and develop innovative proposals for Raytheon innovations in particle accelerator technologies and provide project leadership for specific efforts through frequent interaction and coordination with customers, principle investigators, scientists, project leaders, engineers, and technical support personnel. The Sr. Scientist will guide the work of Scientist II and I, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Technician positions with DE projects and programs. This is a full-time position.U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.Principle Duties and Responsibilities: Working with project management leadership, lead development of novel concepts and designs, simulation and analysis as applied to directed energy concepts, components, sub-systems, and systems.

Write and present proposals to project management, leadership, and customers.

Develop concepts and models and perform simulations to predict and analyze system performance for comparison predictions and project requirements.

Collaborate to design prototypes and optimize their fabrication, integration and commissioning of the hardware.

Perform necessary simulations of the physical processes in particle from beam formation, acceleration and extraction, beam transport, and the interaction of particles with media.

Based on theoretical designs and simulations, assist with subsystem and system mechanical requirements by working with scientists, engineer, and designers/draftspersons supporting subsystem and system mechanical requirements and designs.

Devise and lead the conduction of experiments, collect and interpret the results, and summarize the findings in reports to Raytheon staff, stakeholders, and customers.

Set standards for and mentor project team members, engineers, and others scientists to troubleshoot and maintain performance of particle accelerator prototypes while observing overall collaborative performance of the team and providing feedback on performance for quality improvement.

Review and improve laboratory documentation of prototype specifications and procedures to support engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.

Write detailed specifications and procedures to support the engineering, manufacturing and quality teams.

Required Education/Skills: MSC or PhD in Physics with a focus on accelerator technology.

Minimum of ten (10) years of experience with the physics and technology of novel concepts and developments in particle accelerators.
