GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs a variant of professional nursing and routine medical services which are directly related to patient care of inmates that are legally in custody in the Delano Modified Community Correctional Facility (DMCCF), including independent judgment in assessment, treatment of illnesses and minor wounds physician referral and follow up nursing care as directed by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or Health Care Administrator (HCA). Follow guidelines pursuant to State of California - Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Urgent/Emergent and Sick Call Protocols, while following all California Correctional Healthcare Services (CCHCS) policies and procedures. While adhering to the above-mentioned guidelines, the registered nurse will perform the following functions:

Direct observation of medication administration to patient.

Conduct appropriate phlebotomy for collection of laboratory specimens per orders.

Pick-up sick call forms (7362) at varies times throughout the day, complete sick call form based on inmate patient complaint.

Attend daily care team huddle.

Assist with doctors line.

Maintain RN sick call line.

When necessary, pick-up medication at North Kern State Prison.

Medication distribution to inmates.

Medication reconciliation of pharmaceutical pick-up from North Kern State Prison.

RN face-to-face audits.

Order supplies as necessary.

Attend to medical emergencies/urgent care.

Respond to receiving and release (RNR) for new intakes.

Assess new intakes.

Schedule new intakes for physician.

Participate in emergency drills.

Transfer patients to higher level of care as needed.

Utilize appropriate medical protocols.

Obtain and record patient medical history.

Provides medical evaluation to staff and patients as needed per 7219 (Medical Report of Injury or Unusual Occurrence)

Effective communication with patient must be documented.

Secures medication to protect against inappropriate use by others.

Schedule routine sick calls.

Provide treatment for minor medical complaints.

Assist in maintaining patient medical records and files.

Must utilize eUHR, Medrec, Citrix, and other computer programs including Outlook daily.

Attend scheduled staff meetings to review policies, protocols and to update provision of medical services.

Works collaboratively and cooperatively with correctional staff, North Kern State Prison, and other CCHCS staff.

Works as a vital team member with fellow employees.

Perform nurse-to-nurse report and perform sharps count with on-coming/off-going registered nurse.

Complete orders as directed by physician.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Principles and practices of acute care and nursing assessment.

Principles and practices underlying professional nursing techniques.

Diagnostic and screening tests, phlebotomy, institutional health care requirements, CCHCS policies, procedures and guidelines.

Ability to identify and evaluate patient health care needs.

Display independent judgment.

Interact courteously and tactfully with patients.

Attend work as scheduled and/or required.

Ability to operate a 12-lead EKG machine.

Disease process and treatment modalities.

Principles and procedures of infection control.

Principles of effective verbal, written and group communication.

ABILITY TO:

Apply nursing principles and techniques.

Assess, evaluate and record symptoms and behavior.

Plan, organize and direct the work of others.

Analyze situations accurate and take effective action.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a California accredited school of nursing with an Associates, Bachelors or Masters Degree in nursing and in good standing with the Board of Registered Nursing.

One (1) year of practical experience.

Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)

Preference placed on applicants with emergency department experience (Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic experience can be substituted for emergency department experience).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Drivers License

Successful completion of background check

Successful completion of drug test
