POSITION

An hourly Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance (LRAM) Technician position is available with Colorado State University (CSU) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML), and will be located at Camp Roberts, California. The successful incumbent will assist the LRAM Coordinator and provide support to the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program at Camp Roberts. The LRAM team/ITAM Program applies best management practices to reduce/control erosion to provide safe access to maneuver training roads and trails in the training areas.

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. LOCATION

Camp Roberts, at 42,784 acres, is the largest training area under the control of the California Army National Guard. The mission at Camp Roberts is to facilitate the training, mobilization and security of the National Guard, Army Reserve and Active Component units in support of federal, state and community missions. Camp Roberts is located in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties on Hwy 101, approximately 9 miles north of Paso Robles. Cities near Camp Roberts have an abundance of recreational opportunities, picturesque landscapes, and attractive neighborhoods.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be a member of the LRAM team stewarding various training areas. Work efforts include:

• Implementation of maneuver trail improvements such as grading, outsloping, installing water bars, diversion ditches, berm removal, compacting, and spreading aggregate

• Vegetation control/land rehabilitation efforts including digging, trenching, seeding, watering, and clearing dry/dead vegetation

• Removal of miscellaneous waste materials in training such as old culverts, communication wire, concertina wire, support poles, barbed wire, etc.

• Perform the basic preventative maintenance on equipment to include cleaning, greasing, checking and maintaining fluids, track tightening, and operational safety

• Daily operation of equipment such as 4X4 off-road truck, tractors, compactor, skid steer, front end loader, backhoe, and water truck

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather (i.e. including low humidity and extreme heat) as well as conduct work and walk long distances on rough terrain

• Must be able to lift 50-70 pounds repetitively

• Experience in applying best management practices to reduce/control erosion

• Experience in land rehabilitation

• Experience operating effectively and safely equipment such as tractors, compactor, skid steer, front end loader, backhoe, and water truck

• Experience safely operating and maintaining a chainsaw

• Must have or be able to obtain a valid California driver's license

• A High School Diploma or GED

• The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A Class A license (CDL) is desirable for this position

• Previous experience safely operating and maintaining equipment such as graders, dozers, excavators, and hauling equipment

• Previous experience safely operating and maintaining erosion control equipment such as hydro seeders, aero-mulchers, seed harvester, seed drills

• Experience working on a military installation

• Experience working with natural resources in California

• Experience collecting and propagating California native tree, shrub, forb and grass species

• Experience with the use of global position systems (GPS)

• Experience in Invasive species management practices

• A certified Arborist License is desirable for this position

• A qualified Applicator License is desirable for this position

PAY RATE and DURATION

Pay rate is $18-$25/hour depending on qualifications. Duration of the position will be from April 2019 through December 2019. Housing and relocation expenses are not provided.
