The KBase DevOps team manages a production environment with roughly 100 distinct services, and several thousand vCPUs and close to a petabyte of spinning storage. The production environment includes graph, JSON document and SQL databases, as well as batch schedulers, object stores and dynamically allocated Jupyter Notebooks. In addition to the main production environment there are several smaller CI and testing environments, and Github based code repositories with build and test automation, and release engineering and procedures.

Production Services Product Supervisor: This position is also responsible for the ongoing maintenance and update of services once they have transitioned into production from the Advanced Platform engineering team. These services may be graphical and user facing, such as the KBase Narrative, the Dashboard/UI, or backend services such as object stores, the toolchain used to automatically build and release KBase apps or automated data import and enrichment procedures. Roadmaps for new features, scalability and technical debt management must be maintained, and resourcing and scheduling to implement the roadmaps must be negotiated.

What You Will Do:
  • Identify and evaluate emerging technologies and explore new features that would provide valuable new capabilities and enhance system performance and usability.
  • Develop/maintain a strategic plan for KBase infrastructure in partnership with KBase leadership; coordinate efforts to implement this plan.
  • Research and promote engineering practices that improve code quality, engineering productivity and job satisfaction.
  • Maintain and update the existing continuous integration process and promote/enforce automated build/test practices within the KBase developer community.
  • Lead (or collaborate on) systems programming and DevOps projects to maintain and enhance system functionality, in areas such as container orchestration, systems monitoring, reliability and disaster recovery.
  • Work with the DevOps team to develop and use tools for enhancing platform reliability, stability, usability, performance, and security.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Serve as a champion of Agile engineering practices within KBase.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop the staff responsible for maintaining KBase’s computing infrastructure.
  • Participate in working/user/advocacy groups and represent KBase and its interests to the broader DOE community.
  • Work with the KBase staff to promote norms that support a diverse and inclusive workplace. Become familiar with subtle forms of bias that may manifest in the workplace, and cooperate with others to eliminate them.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in large projects, and contribute to an active intellectual environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to make presentations to engineering, management and external partners explaining plans, architectures, roadmaps and/or new practices and work with partners to achieve consensus.
  • Ability to understand user needs and show initiative, tact and good judgment in developing solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to discover, identify key requirements and lead evaluations among different architectural alternatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance, mentoring, and leadership to staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with staff to formulate career paths and put together a development plan to help staff achieve goals.
