POSITION: Biologist Interpreter
Full-time / Benefited / Hourly / Non-Exempt

COMPENSATION: $19.00 - $24.00 per hour DOE
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Biologist Interpreter is an office position with occasional field work that requires a background in biology or a related field with a specialty in botany, or coursework in plant identification/taxonomy. Under general supervision from the GIC Project Manager, the Biologist Interpreter will assist the Geographical Information Center with a variety of duties related to the programs vegetation mapping and inventory projects. Duties include but are not limited to:
Aerial photo and image interpretation of natural areas including wetland, vernal pool, and riparian vegetation
Enter vegetation data into existing databases
Perform Rapid Assessments/Releves following California Native Plant Society protocol
Data entry and quality control of vegetation databases
Collect and prepare plant samples for identification
Heads-up digitizing vegetation polygons and attribute with biological data
Use spreadsheets, databases, and word processing functions on computer systems
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Education and Experience - requires Bachelor of Science in biology or a related field with specialized training/coursework in plant taxonomy, plant community ecology, general ecology, or other related courses; experience in field sampling of plant populations or vegetation communities. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Attributes - Thorough knowledge of botany and plant taxonomy for plant identification; knowledge of California flora and California plant communities; ecological field sampling methods including plant cover estimation; use of GPS and other field equipment; general knowledge of geographical information systems (GIS); experience with ESRI software; experience with the National Vegetation Classification Standard and Californias vegetation classification system; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to conduct field work while promoting safe working conditions including navigating in remote, rugged terrain using a topographic map and compass; proven ability to work independently and interact well with crew members; ability to prioritize tasks and to adjust to change in a fast-paced environment; ability to solve problems; ability to coordinate daily field tasks, manage data for field team, ensuring data are recorded and entered accurately and consistently; Must possess a valid California driver license, Class C.
