LOCATION: The CSU, Chico Research Foundation's Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) is an umbrella organization for a number of grant-funded programs that serve high-risk residents in northern California. CHC develops and implements nutrition education, food security and physical activity programs and policy development addressing the needs of diverse populations. CHC provides the infrastructure and coordination of shared resources for interdisciplinary student-faculty research, leadership development, and civic engagement/service learning experiences for University students. CHC values and supports sustainable food systems, livable communities with access to healthy foods and physically active lifestyles in local, regional and global communities.

COMPENSATION: Pay commensurate with experience and education

• NES I $22.00 - $29.00/hour

• NES II $24.50 - $32.38/hour

• NES III $27.31 - $37.71/hour

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Directors or NES IV, this part-time Nutrition Education Specialist (NES)/RD position is responsible for the interpretation and application of current science and research-based nutrition knowledge in order to prepare, organize, and implement nutrition interventions for the promotion of positive eating and activity patterns and the prevention of obesity and diet-related diseases for north state residents, including those with diverse cultures and socio-economic status. In addition, the NES may be asked to carry out specific tasks related to CHC programs, specifically, worksite wellness, medical nutrition therapy, food safety, food production, menu review and nutrient analysis, school district and county nutrition education programs.

The Registered Dietitian will be involved but not limited to the following activities:

• General Nutrition Counseling through Medical Office Partnership(s) with CHC:

o Provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and Consultation/motivational interviewing (MI) counseling with parents and individuals in an appointment or class setting as requested

o Conduct nutrition assessments for physician-driven referrals

o Develop and implement nutrition plans based on patient's needs

o Communicate with physician regarding patient plans and treatment goals

• Nutrition counseling and training coordination will be provided to E-Center through a partnership with CHC and includes the following activities:

o Providing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for children 0-5 and prenatal nutrition counseling, for special diets and/or other nutrition-related disease states/issues, including, but not limited to, anemia, overweight, underweight, lead toxicity, swallowing, diabetes, etc. as requested/recommended by the partnering physicians or Health and Nutrition Coordinator/Manager.

o Provide counseling with parents (up to 10 appointments or consultations per year) regarding any of the above nutrition-related disease states/issues as requested by Health and Nutrition Coordinator/Manager. This may include identifying barriers for behavior change, key strategies for practical behavior change, provide eligibility screening and referrals for eligible social services, identify daily goals, and plans to follow-up with the physician and/or Health and Nutrition Coordinator/Manager.

o Participate on Health Services Advisory Committee as invited and upon availability

• Training Coordinator:

o 20 trainings will be conducted in-person throughout the E-Center service area and will be 1-2 hours in duration, unless otherwise requested. RD will prepare training objectives, agendas, evaluations and Power Point presentations for each training. Trainings will include a variety of teaching methods including direct instruction, demonstrations, hands-on learning experiences, group discussions and peer teaching. Trainings can cover a variety of topics including but not limited to the following:

 MyPlate (Preschoolers, Pregnant Moms and Breastfeeding Moms)

 Healthy Eating for Young Children

 Food Allergies

 Strategies for Picky Eaters

 Division of Responsibility (Ellyn Satter)

 Child and Adult Care Food Program Menu Planning

 Food Safety

 Garden Based Nutrition Education

 Physical Activity for Infants, Toddlers and/or Preschoolers

 Painting Playgrounds for Movement

• Providing trainings to CHC staff, as well as foodservice and public health staff, on topics such as clinical nutrition, food/labor cost effectiveness, food safety/sanitation, and food production as needed/requested

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: The candidate must possess strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills. Professional experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the functions described above as well as the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with Northern California school districts, county agencies, and community organizations, the campus community and the public; the ability to solve problems by gathering data, reasoning logically and drawing valid conclusions; the ability to supervise staff and communicate verbally and in writing with clarity and proficiency; the ability to be flexible in response to ideas and points of view; the ability to make decisions when necessary and to set priorities and deadlines to ensure projects are completed and questions and problems are responded to in a timely manner. In order to monitor, evaluate, and apply current nutrition research findings, the candidate should be familiar with strategies for the prevention of obesity and for effective nutrition education and physical activity promotion. The degree of understanding and application in the following areas will also help to determine the initial NES hiring level: Medical Nutrition Therapy (including nutritional assessment in regard to laboratory values, food and drug interactions, medical history and anthropometrics), familiarity with community service agencies and governmental assistance programs; cultural competencies associated with language, social, and economic barriers; techniques of information dissemination, preparations and display of exhibits, leaflets, press releases and other media and audio-visual educational materials; behavior modification/behavior change theories; and California education standards. In addition, the candidate must possess a valid California Driver's License and good driving record. Fingerprinting and participation in the DMV Employer Pull Notice Program (driving record) will be required upon hire.

In addition:

• NES I requires BS in Nutrition, Dietetics or closely related field and Registered Dietitian (RD) Credential (or eligibility)

• NES II requires BS in Nutrition, Dietetics and Registered Dietitian (RD) and 2 years full-time equivalent related work experience at CHC or similar organization

• NES III BS in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Registered Dietitian (RD) and master's degree and 4 years full-time equivalent related work experience at CHC or similar organization

• Competency with low-income populations preferred, but not required
