Do you love the Chico arts and culture scene? Are you detailed-oriented and like to write and fact-check? The Chico News & Review is seeking a dependable person to create our calendar of events and assist the editorial department in its day-to-day operations.

This is a part-time position, between 10 and 15 hours a week, DOE. Salary is $13/hr.

Published weekly since 1977, the Chico News & Review is a family owned business that bas been part of the Chico community since 1977. It is the largest newspaper (40,000 circulation) north of Sacramento. Our mission is to publish great newspapers that are successful and enduring, create a quality work environment that encourages employees to grow while respecting personal welfare, and to have a positive impact on our communities and make them better places to live. CN&R features a lively mixture of news, features, commentary, arts and calendar of events. Our publication reflects our work environment: decidedly NOT corporate, yet an effective foundation of passion and professionalism topped off with an edgy but laid-back attitude.

Responsibilities include:

Create a complete and accurate calendar of events in the print and online CN&R

Enter listings information and expand upon some of that information

Fact-check calendar listings

Write arts-related picks for the calendar section as needed, as well as other picks for other sections.

Take part in editorial staff meetings and brainstorming sessions

Proofread editorial content, as assigned by the editor

Qualifications, Knowledge and Abilities:

Must be both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the local arts and culture scene (food, music, galleries, clubs, etc.)

Experienced and capable with database entry

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university (or in progress); or one to two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge of Associated Press style and proofreading ability

Ability to demonstrate good writing skills using original or innovative techniques or style

Familiarity with LibreOffice and InDesign a plus

Ability to interact with the public in a professional manner

Time management skills and ability to work within deadlines

Experience with and interest in social media

Talents:

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Good interpersonal skills

Ability to multitask and work independently
