Job Description

General Position Summary:
The Business Intelligence Developer is responsible for developing, implementing and supporting reporting, analytics and business intelligence solutions to meet the information needs of the organization and Company Business. The Business Intelligence Developer supports one or more business units in preparing weekly and monthly analysis and reporting to drive the business while ensuring accuracy and consistency. Must be able to work with multiple teams and business units simultaneously and thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must demonstrate the eagerness and ability to learn and must work well in a team environment. The BI developer will have a working knowledge of development methodologies and tools. Experience with, and knowledge of, healthcare data and software is an essential component of success in this role. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Analytics.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
  • Consistently exhibit behavior and communication skills that demonstrate Optum’s commitment to superior customer service, including quality, care and concern with each and every internal and external customer.
  • Design, implement, and maintain data warehouses using SQL Server Replication, SSIS, SSAS, and T-SQL scripting
  • Work with business stakeholders to create and maintain reports in SSRS using relational and SSAS data sources
  • Create ad hoc reports based on various client and service usage attributes
  • Provide database administration support during deployments and migrations
  • Mentor others on a wide range of database and analytic techniques
  • Gathers requirements, analyzes, creates design documents, and performs impact analysis
  • Develops Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) processes to acquire and load data from internal and external sources
  • Evaluate data systems, operations, and organizational aspects of various departments, and make recommendations
  • Build database models, dashboards, reports, interfaces for BI packages
  • Identify data security issues and recommend solutions
  • Prioritize multiple tasks effectively and communicate progress well among teams.
  • Contribute skills and knowledge to other projects as directed by management.
  • Use, protect, and disclose HCP patients’ protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.

Job Scope:
Job consists of unique and multi-dimensional work situations with occasional variations from the norm. Job involves a moderate degree of complexity. Incumbent is responsible for working with Analytics/Data management teams to confirm data from multiple sources is pulled correctly for the use it is intended. Duties are performed independently with minimal supervision and working with other Analysts verifying results and methodologies. Decisions are made within established departmental guidelines, but also by using judgment for the best reasonable outcome. Position has high visibility to Senior Leadership and Executives through reporting. Errors in judgment or work performance could result in insufficient operation for the organization.

Supervisory Responsibility:
No supervisory responsibility.

Specific Job Skills and Experience:
  • 6+ years of IT experience. Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience working with SQL Server.
  • 4+ years of BI development, SQL and/or development experience, preferably in the healthcare insurance industry.
  • 4+ years of experience with data warehouses, data marts, dimensional modelling and OLAP technologies
  • 2+ years of experience in healthcare data required.
  • Knowledge of SQL queries, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Familiarity with BI technologies (e.g. Microsoft Power BI, Oracle BI)
  • In-depth understanding of database management systems, online analytical processing (OLAP) and ETL (Extract, transform, load) framework
  • Experience building Reports, Scorecards and Dashboards w/Tableau a plus
  • Knowledge of software development, QA methodologies and release process.
  • Good project/time management and teamwork skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare industry and healthcare-specific interface formats.
  • Driven by a fast-paced, energetic, results-oriented environment.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently as needed.
  • Proven abilities to take initiative and be innovative

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher required (Preferred)
