Deputy City Attorney

Vacancy expired!

The Fresno City Attorney’s Office (CAO) seeks qualified attorneys for either litigation or municipal transaction and advisory work. Fresno is the fifth largest city in California, with over 3,000 employees, and 15 departments. Deputy City Attorneys work under the direction of the City Attorney, who is appointed by the City Council. The CAO provides legal services to all City departments, staff, and elected officials for a very wide range of transactional, litigation, and code enforcement matters. The Litigation Unit of the CAO handles litigated cases involving claims of personal injury, wrongful death, use of force, civil rights violations, and issues related to personnel, labor, and employment. The Transactional Unit handles a diverse set of matters including real estate transactions, development agreements, land use, municipal finance, competitive process and public contracting, constitutional issues, Brown Act, Public Records Act, CEQA, and drafting ordinances and legislation. Members of the Code Enforcement Unit enforce violations of the City’s municipal code, seek injunctions, petition the court for receiverships, apply for and execute inspection warrants, and conduct a variety of legal investigations.

Attorneys would be expected to either have a working knowledge of these topics or be prepared to quickly develop a working knowledge of these areas. Qualifications would also include excellent legal writing, research, analysis, and communication skills. A high degree of maturity, creativity, judgment, and discretion is required. The CAO offers opportunities to be directly involved in numerous high profile, interesting, rewarding, and challenging projects. Many projects are novel and complex.

Attorneys are not represented and serve at the will of the City Attorney. Attorneys must be licensed to practice and in good standing in the State of California. Benefits are excellent, and salary is negotiable, depending upon qualifications. To apply, please email your resumé and a cover letter to the attention of Katie Doerr, Chief Assistant City Attorney at Katie.Doerr@fresno.gov.
