Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Commodity Manager will be a highly visible member of the Supply Chain team and reports to the Purchasing Manager. This position performs a variety of procurement functions involved in the acquisition of materials and services and provides support to the Operations & Engineering Departments. The Commodity Manager additionally has responsibility to manage and develop a strategy for one or more commodity categories.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Analyzes the requirements of key commodities, including specification requirements, preferred suppliers and dates commodities are needed.

· Prepares and maintains purchase orders for the purchase of parts and materials, goods and services.

· Obtains price quotes and compares quotes with the specifications and availability of items.

· Negotiates the best cost for commodities; exercises considerable judgment to determine acceptable price balanced against the optimum price, quality, quantity and schedule needs.

· Assures that purchase contracts comply with Seek, customer and Export control requirements.

· Works closely with Engineering on changes to drawings and specifications, and follows up with suppliers to revise and amend purchase orders.

· Communicates with suppliers by mail, telephone and e-mail to expedite and resolve problems and to obtain required material certifications, test reports and product specifications.

· Develops sources of supply where preferred suppliers are inadequate. Works closely with engineering and product management to ensure suppliers are developed and qualified in support of the product and technology roadmap.

· Maintains electronic records and prepares reports of order status and expected delivery dates.

· Responds to requests for emergency purchase requests.

· May provide instruction and work direction to buyers and staff assisting Purchasing activities.

· Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality internal and external customer service.

· Takes full responsibility for the RFx process from supplier sourcing through to business award. Must prepare requests for proposal (RFP) and purchase order specifications clearly and concisely; understand the requirements of parts and material specifications; read engineering drawings; analyze quotes and exercise judgment in determining acceptable price; prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports and research information online.

· Schedule and lead supplier meetings to review commercial terms and technical roadmaps and formulate a strategy to convey product and market information back to the Procurement and Engineering organizations.

· Research and monitor the industry/market trends and report on significant activities in the areas of cost fluctuations, new technologies, supplier capacity and R&D investments, and mergers and acquisitions.

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

· Knowledge of purchasing principles, procedures and terminology required

· Must have strong communication skills, telephone etiquette, communicate effectively in English in oral and written form.

· Strong computer skills required using current versions of standard software applications to prepare quotes, purchase orders, spreadsheets, reports, statistical data and correspondence.

· Experience with ERP systems required, Netsuite a plus.

· Must be able to learn and apply new technology; manage time efficiently; mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction multiplication, division and percentages) rapidly and accurately.

· Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision; exercise sound judgment; establish priorities and meet deadlines; work cooperatively and effectively with those contacted during the course of work.

· Solid experience in methods of invoicing including shipping and handling charges, discounts and taxes; laws, rules and regulations affecting purchasing operations; sources of supplies and services.

· Natural leadership competencies; influences others through style, personality and subject matter expertise rather than organizational design.

· Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural global business environment.

Qualifications

· ABA degree in business administration or related field; or a combination of education, training and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the job.

· 15+ years of experience as a Commodity Manager/Sr. Buyer in a manufacturing environment, and involving the acquisition of manufacturing parts and materials.
