Direct Support Professional is a job that few people have heard about. And there isn't a Craigslist Category that works best. DSPs are people who work ONE on ONE with a person who has disabilities, providing support needed for them to be able to live in their own homes, access and participate in community, pursue their interests and live their best life.

DSPs mentor, teach, encourage, provide companionship and support for one person. It's a job that presents variety within a shift. DSPs do not have to sit all day and they do not have to stand all day. They don't work with the public. They aren't glued to a screen the whole day. They aren't doing one repetitive task the whole shift.
DSP positions vary widely depending on the needs, circumstances, personalities and interests of the person they support. The people we provide services to have challenges such as Cognitive, Developmental, Behavioral, Physical Disabilities which might include Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and Autism. We also support people who have Mental Health and Behavioral Challenges as well as those who are Aging or have higher medical needs.
Some of the people we support really like to get out and walk in nature for hours each day. Others are home bound. Everyone else is somewhere in between. They have interests in art, cooking, gardening, swimming, bird identification, church, singing, dancing, traveling, online gaming, coding, listening to music, movies, or reading. Some are professional artists, laborers, teachers, or activists, volunteers, students.
Currently, we have Full or Part Time shifts open and are hiring DSPs for the following people:
- A woman who loves relaxing while listening to music and coloring with staff.
- A young woman who trains daily to run in local marathons. She would love to have someone who can run with her. She does 3 miles in 27 minutes. Can you keep up?
- A creative young man who needs encouragement to pause online gaming in order to explore his other vast interests which include taking walks in nature.
- A young man who is active in sports. He currently has some overnight shifts open that are great for people who like to be paid when they sleep, study, or knit.
- An elder who likes to tell his staff stories about the olden days in Humboldt.
- A man who is highly dependent on staff and requires very close supervision to keep him safe. He does best when hiking Humboldt's beautiful trails for hours each day.
REQUIREMENTS:
-Must be local. We need to interview staff in person and we need staff to begin training sooner than relocation would allow.
-Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance and have a clean driving record.
-Must have a vehicle that is insured and in good working condition that you can use for work.
