$68,744 - $96,304/year, depending on experience. About: HSU Dining Services is a division of Humboldt State University Center, which is an auxiliary organization and integral member of the Humboldt campus community. The unit operates and provides all aspects of culinary services including a full-service, seven days per week dining facility for resident students, a variety of cafes, marketplaces, and food court options. Humboldt State University is part of the 23-campus California State University System. The University has a comprehensive arts and sciences curriculum, which is recognized nationally for its high academic quality. Founded in 1913, HSU is one of the premier public institutions in the western United States; it is a rural and residential campus with an enrollment of approximately 8,000 students. The main campus is located in Arcata, California, in the northwestern part of the state along the coast, and situated among redwood trees in an area that offers unmatched scenic beauty, moderate climate, and opportunities for outdoor activities. The surrounding Humboldt County locale has a population of 130,000. The community offers an excellent range of businesses, services, and cultural activities/performances. The local schools are ranked in the top performance percentiles, both nationally and in the state.

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Dining Services, this position is responsible for multiple dining units at various campus locations, assuring that each is operated in a fiscally prudent manner by the continual monitoring of financial records and confirming purchasing, storage, and inventory controls are in place. The Associate Director plans and develops long-range goals that maintain the departments financial viability as well as responding to customer needs; provides leadership, direction, and support to the supervisory team directly that oversees the daily operation of the assigned dining and retail locations; and is responsible for monitoring and evaluating marketing, customer service, maintenance, and sanitation of all units. The incumbent also facilitates staff development for all levels of employees via planning and developing training programs; attendance of relevant seminars/workshops; and traveling to professional meetings and trade shows.

The ideal candidate must have experience managing a large food service establishment, preferably on a college/university campus. The ability to work well under pressure, make sound and quick decisions, and work in a diverse environment is key to being successful in this position. The incumbent should also:

 Be a people person, team-oriented, collaborative, and student-centered

 Possess strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to create clear and concise reports

 Be familiar with CBORD and MICROS systems and residential student meal plans

 Have experience with catering and in-house special events with a strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service

 Place a high priority in sustainability and fostering a green campus environment

 Present an emphasis on local produce and considers nutrition and cleanliness of utmost importance

Sample Duties include:

Plan and administer the operation of a multi-faceted residential dining service facility with full financial responsibility for a $12 million annual budget

Oversee hiring, training, and scheduling; evaluate, promote, counsel, coach, and discipline a staff consisting of approximately 26 full-time staff and up to 400 temporary casual and student employees

Create and implement programs and special events that include food service enhancements for residential and conference guests

Along with the dining management team, jointly develop and plan menu cycles, including dining needs for special events within the residential housing/dining program

Ensure the operating agreement with the University is executed according to specifications

Required Qualifications: Education & Experience:

Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse staff and experience in staff development.

Ability to work with all ages and educational backgrounds

Working knowledge of principles and methods consistent with purchasing, service, business, and human resource management

Must possess strong interpersonal and customer relations skills and demonstrate good leadership, interpersonal, and excellent communication skills

Experienced with computerized inventory systems and point of sales cash operations. Computer knowledge is a must

Knowledge of required state, federal, and county laws and regulations relating to the operation of a campus dining services facility

Working knowledge of operating budgets within established guidelines, labor, and food cost monitoring skills while operating within a university campus residential dining program

Demonstrated skills in written and verbal communication, as well as excellent interpersonal and managerial leadership, coaching, and employee development skills

Demonstrated ability to provide creative leadership and make consistent and sound judgement calls

Minimum of four years professional management experience in the food service industry, with an emphasis on large residential operations, fiscal planning, personnel administration, and food production

Preferred Qualifications:

 Bachelors degree or a combination of education and experience in the hospitality or food service industries which has provided the candidate with the required qualifications listed above

 Ten years experience in collegiate dining management including five years of executive management

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses:

A proven track record of financial success

Demonstrated ability to take ownership of an operation

ServeSafe certification (preferred) or equivalent, or obtain before the first day of employment

Ability to work on committees and interact with students and guests

Proven past expertise in marketing

Demonstrated convenience/grocery store success and experience

Valid drivers license and a driving record acceptable to our insurance underwriters

Ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, environment) into all aspects of performing job duties.
