Food Service Worker “ Catering Application Deadline: Friday, December 6, 2019

$2,409 - $3,380/mo. ($13.90 - $19.50/hr.) Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the pay range. This is a full-time position in HSU Dining Services with excellent benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage; CalPERS retirement, life insurance, voluntary pre-tax health and dependent care reimbursement accounts and vacation, holidays, and paid sick leave.

Position Summary: Under general supervision, the Food Service Worker is responsible for the overall front of the house catering operation, which includes working with the Food Service Worker Lead and the Catering Coordinator on scheduling, production timing with cooks, set-up, visual presentation, and serving of catering events. This position needs to maintain high-quality standards in regards to cleanliness, food quality, food safety, sanitation, and product placement; ensuring workplace safety; providing excellent customer service to the HSU community; and promoting a successful dining operation.

Duties: The Food Service Worker “ Catering is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Review upcoming events with Catering Coordinator and/or FSW Lead to establish schedules that ensure timely delivery and set-up of catering events

Ensure timely delivery, proper set-up and oversee clean-up for catered events

Coordinate and set-up catering events in a logical professional manner taking into account visual appeal, accessibility, and food safety

Work with kitchen staff to coordinate timing for delivery of food so that it is fresh and on time for client

Maintain quality presentation to enhance customer service and satisfaction

Possess knowledge of and observe all food sanitation, safety, and food handling guidelines

Assist in the preparation and packaging of food items required for catered events

Properly clean and maintain service areas and catering equipment, ensuring compliance with health regulations and safety standards, as well as, maintaining catering equipment

Use creativity along with established procedures to create a visually appealing presentation

Provide appropriate signage at all events listing the menu items, potential allergens, local products, and the HSU Dining Services logo

Establish and maintain efficient working relationships with kitchen staff, unit managers, the Catering Coordinator, student assistants, and our customers to ensure effective communication and an enhanced team effort

Inform management of customer comments, suggestions, and concerns

Communicate with management ways for improving quality, variety, and efficiency of the operation

Provide excellent customer service and promote a positive attitude with customers and staff to ensure a smoothly working operation

Communicate with customers in a professional and positive manner

Assist in providing training, supervision, and coaching of catering employee

Respond to and resolve customer concerns in a prompt and positive manner

Store leftover items using proper methods making sure they are wrapped and labeled

Maintain a general knowledge of UC and HSU policies

Follow and support the campus and Dining Services sustainability practices

Minimum Qualifications: Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent plus one year of commercial food service catering experience, one year of food service experience and strong customer service skills. Possess ServSafe certification or equivalent, or obtain before the first day of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the duties listed above, knowledge of the proper set up and serving of a variety of catering events. Understanding of safe food handling and sanitation practices. Experienced with foodservice industry activities and equipment usage including good working knowledge of kitchen, cooking skills, knife sets and prep techniques. Knowledgeable in rules and regulations concerning serving alcoholic beverages. Previous experience in serving beer and wine helpful. Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work effectively in a climate characterized by heavy traffic loads, shifting priorities, and the need to balance multiple tasks while providing excellent customer service. Possess an energy level capable of working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment for extended periods of time. Have a positive, outgoing and pleasant work ethic. Ease in working with a diverse population, including students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships in a team-oriented environment. Possess excellent follow through skills and attention to detail. Must be able to apply, interpret, and adhere to department policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Basic knowledge of computer software, email, online ordering, word processing, and spreadsheets. Ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economic, societal, environmental) into all aspects of performing job duties.

Physical Requirements: Average physical agility and ability to stand for prolonged periods of time; strength and mobility to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds; reach, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push, and pull items. Must have manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range and clear verbal communication. Ability to work extended shifts.

Special Conditions of Employment: Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. ServSafe certificate or equivalent desired, or the ability to attain certification. Speak, read, write, and understand English, bi-lingual in Spanish is helpful. Occasional layoff due to lack of work; these periods generally fall on semester breaks and summer session. Strong customer service orientation. Must comply with proper grooming standards and present a professional appearance.
