Come work at the best little hospital in the redwoods!

Mad River Community Hospital: A Unique Acute Care Facility

The friendly university city of Arcata, CA is home to Mad River Community Hospital, a privately owned, 78-bed acute care hospital nestled between the redwoods and the Pacific Ocean, just minutes away from a river, bay, beaches and forests. Arcata is an open-minded and welcoming small city, valuing diversity, culture, art, entrepreneurship, and the protection of its beautiful natural environment. Arcata is just 80 miles south of the Oregon border and 275 miles north of San Francisco, and is known for clean ocean air, moderate temperatures and beautiful landscapes with giant redwoods, flowing rivers and farmlands.

The hospital was granted a provisional Level IV Trauma classification in 2017. Our award-winning Birth Center is the number one choice for capable care and childbirth choices. For several years running, Mad River Community Hospital has been voted “Best Hospital” in the North Coast Journal’s annual “Best of Humboldt” Reader’s Poll. In addition to providing dedicated and respectful patient care, we also offer a Pet Therapy Program and serve fresh produce from an on-site, multi-acre garden and hydroponics greenhouse to patients and in the hospital’s Garden Court Café!

Our Community

Despite its remote location behind the "Redwood Curtain" and population of just 130,000, Humboldt County is home to a vibrant community and culture, with beautifully preserved Victorian-era historic towns, several family operated livestock and dairy farms, and more artists per capita than any other county in California. Our community is rich in the arts: music, theater, dance, concerts, art galleries, and hand-crafted jewelry, woodwork, and artwork in all mediums.

Arcata offers a mild climate year-round, with many amenities of larger cities but with a small-town feel and strong sense of community. An abundance of locally grown and/or locally produced, award-winning artisanal foods, wines, microbrews, and spirits are sold in local markets and served in our many unique restaurants. Our artisan community welcomes you with farm-to-table cafes, art galleries, and boutiques unique to Northern California.

Arcata is also home to Humboldt State University, which offers a seasonal performance venue (Center Arts) and diverse cultural and athletic activities, in addition to educational opportunities. Our school system is outstanding and offers options of public, charter, and private schools that provide a variety of programs and initiatives for youth of all ages. The local airport is serviced by United Airlines/Skywest, with daily flights to major airport hubs in California and Oregon.

There are numerous opportunities for outdoor adventures: cycling, fishing, kayaking, beachcombing, camping, hiking, backpacking, golfing and more, with six nearby rivers, miles of beaches, inland mountain ranges, and Humboldt Bay and the Pacific Ocean at your doorstep. Love to ski or snowboard? Mt. Shasta Ski Park is just 200 miles east of Arcata! With more old-growth redwoods and stretches of undeveloped coast than anywhere else in California, Humboldt County easily earns its ranking as Lonely Planet's top US destination for 2018 and one of the most beautiful counties in the U.S.

With all this going for it, it’s easy to see why so many call the North Coast home!
