This is a temporary position supporting the North Coast Testing Partnership. The estimated length of this position is from 6-9 months.

This position is responsible for performing complex technical work involving the molecular analysis of human biological materials.

UIHS requires a background check and a drug screening for all employees. Our drug screening tests include screening for THC.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Reports to the UIHS and/or Public Health Laboratory manager for daily oversight and general processes.

Understands and comply with HIPAA and other regulations concerning patient confidentiality.

Maintain a calm professional manner at all times.

Works as an effective team member to provide quality healthcare.

Complies with UIHS Infection Prevention and Safety policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).

Extensive and complex steps requiring manual manipulation and pipetting evaluation of data, and careful and accurate work.

Training periods are typically long and require reading of pertinent literature and SOPs.

Evaluate specimens received by the department and organize workflow to provide optimum efficiency of testing and turnaround time of results.

Understands, performs, documents, and troubleshoots quality control procedures.

Maintain equipment by performing assigned maintenance activities and troubleshoot unexpected problems with equipment.

Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls.

Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Operate complex equipment and computer programs related to the equipment and laboratory information system (LIS).

Receive, process, quality review, and data entry of specimens received from testing sites into the LIS. Able to track and answer questions concerning specific specimens.

Perform competency and proficiency testing to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies.

Assist department in writing and maintaining SOPs for clinical assays. Document knowledge by reviewing and attesting to SOPs.

Maintains an organized and clean working environment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Performs all duties in accordance with the UIHS mission, vision, and guiding principles.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

1. Qualified as a Director for high-complexity testing; OR

2. Qualified as a Technical Supervisor for high complexity testing; OR

3. Doctoral degree in clinical laboratory science or chemical, physical or biological science with 1 year training and experience in high-complexity testing; OR

4. Master's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology or chemical, physical, or biological science and 1 year training and experience in high-complexity testing; OR

5. Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology or chemical, physical or biological science and 1 year training and experience in high-complexity testing; OR

6. Associate degree in medical laboratory technology (or pulmonary function) and 2 years laboratory (or blood gas analysis) training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.

The certification and licensure requirements of California Code of Regulations, Title 17, section 1079, and Business and Professions Code section 1206.5 are suspended as to all persons who meet the requirements under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of section 353 of the Public Health Service Act for high complexity testing and who are performing analysis of samples to test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in any certified public health laboratory or licensed clinical laboratory.
