About the California Conservation Corps

The young men and women of the Corps work hard protecting and restoring Californias environment and responding to disasters, becoming stronger workers, citizens and individuals through their service. Since its inception in 1976, the CCC has served as the State of Californias primary link between youth and the environment. With campus located from San Diego County to the Oregon Border, CCC corpsmembers provide close to three million hours of natural resource work annually.

About Corpsmembers

CCC corpsmembers are between the ages of 18 and 25 years old, are not on parole or probation and have tested negative for drug use. A typical day for residential corpsmembers begins at 6:15 with breakfast, followed by Center and dorm room clean-up. By 8:00 A.M. most corpsmembers have left the Center with their crew supervisor and other crew members to work on a variety of projects which may include: building in-stream structures, planting trees, removing non-native plant species, and constructing trails. When not on spike, corpsmembers return to the Center by 4:30 P.M. for dinner followed by several hours of evening classes. Classes attended by corpsmembers may include watershed ecology, light equipment use and maintenance, self esteem, adult basic education, and career awareness.

Special Corpsmember Position Description

Under the direction of the Conservationist II and Residential Advisor, Special Corpsmembers perform the following duties:

Personal interaction with corpsmembers - Talking with and supervising residential corpsmembers during evenings, weekends, and on Center recreation trips, directing corpsmembers to classes, and providing corpsmembers with referrals to counselors, crisis intervention specialists, and health professionals.

Clerical - answering the phone during non-office hours, assisting in the scheduling of classes and guest lecturers, notifying proper Campus personnel during emergency response situations, and assisting the Corpsmember Development CII and Residential Advisor with special projects.

Health and safety - Performing dorm room and facility inspections, documenting damaged property, and completing standardized inspection forms.

Recreation - Planning recreational activities, arranging transportation, and supervising corpsmembers during recreational activities.

Free Time - Monitoring corpsmember activities during evenings and weekends, talking with corpsmembers, monitoring CCC recreational areas, assisting in corpsmember tutoring, and incorporating positive recreational and academic activities into Center life.

Security - Checking in visitors and incoming vehicles, checking all buildings and vehicles are secure, documenting policy violations and safety hazards.

Volunteerism “ Planning volunteer activities, arranging transportation, coordinating with community groups, and supervising corpsmembers during volunteer activities.

General Information

Qualifications - A strong desire and ability to interact in a positive manner with young adults; interest in the natural resources, teaching, and/ or human services: a valid California drivers license with a clean driving record and the ability to obtain a Class B License; the ability to understand and enforce State of California policies; the ability to work independently; the ability to proficiently operate PC computers in the Windows environment. Personal characteristics include: punctuality, attendance, honesty, cooperation, adaptability, personal initiative, ability to follow instruction, an interest in learning, and good work habits.

Wage - $15.50 per hour.

Benefits - Time and one-half for any hours worked over 40 hours per week, paid vacation and sick leave, optional medical insurance.

Work shifts - Weekend day shifts start at 8:00 A.M. and end at 4:30 P.M.

Weekday dorm inspection shifts start at 1:30 P.M. and end at 10:00 P.M.

Weekday swing shifts start at 3:30 P.M. and end at 12:00 A.M.

Graveyard shifts start at 12:00 AM and end at 8A.M
