A mid-sized Engineering Consulting Firm, is looking for an experienced candidate to serve as the Soil and Material Testing Lab Supervisor/Manager in our Rancho Cucamonga, California office. The desired candidate would be proficient in how to run and keep a laboratory certified and compliant in areas such as: Caltrans, ASTM, CCRL. In addition, the candidate would oversee operational and technical aspects of running the geotechnical/materials laboratory. Requires hands on knowledge, use and certification of ASTM, CCRL and Caltrans testing procedures for soils, aggregates, asphalt, Portland cement concrete and masonry.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following (other duties may be assigned):

Obtain and keep current all ASTM, CCRL, DSA, Caltrans and other certifications required for operations for the geotechnical/materials laboratory (soils, aggregate, asphalt, Portland cement concrete, grout/mortar, etc.).

Responsible for renewals of all laboratory certifications (e.g. Caltrans, DSA, AMRL, etc.).

Coordinate staffing needs, daily work schedules and workloads with supervisors.

Prioritization of workloads and job set ups.

Oversee laboratory quality control.

Technical review of all laboratory-generated data.

Prepare final laboratory reports.

Oversee/coordinate all laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration.

Financial responsibility and keeping within budget goals.

Communicate and interface effectively with clients.

Communicate with Project Managers progress of each job.

Communicate with accounting and resolve any/all invoice issues.

Computer data reduction input and analysis.

Schedule and coordinate laboratory safety meetings.

Follow company policies and procedures, including all safety procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the soils and materials lab. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Must have experience with soils testing (ASTM and Caltrans procedures), concrete (ASTM and Caltrans procedures, capping, compressive strength of cylinders, flexural strength of concrete), asphalt (Caltrans procedures, CTM 310, 362, 370, 379, 382), aggregates (ASTM and Caltrans procedures, CTM 201, 202, 206, 207, 208, 211, 212, 214, 215, 216, 223, 227, 338, 370), and miscellaneous (ASTM and Caltrans procedures, e.g. grout and mortar testing, CT-541, 515). Effective written, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work as part of a team involving staff, clients and outside agencies. Proficient using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and SharePoint) and AutoCAD. Strong problem-solving skills, including identifying data quality issues. Strong organizational skills, including an ability to prioritize activities and work with limited supervision. Detail minded and thorough. Results oriented and able to complete tasks on deadline with little supervision. Ability to make good decisions using sound, professional judgment.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS and TRAINING

Position requires candidate to obtain and keep current the following certifications and training:

ACI “ Concrete Field Testing Technician “ Grade 1

ACI “ Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician “ Level 1

ACI “ Concrete Strength Testing Technician

ACI “ Aggregate Testing Technician “ Level 1

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelors degree from four-year College or university preferred with at least three years related experience. Minimum of three years management experience; with two plus years in asphalt and construction material testing laboratory.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

English speaking, reading and writing required.
