The Director, Global Data Privacy will design and implement Western Digital’s privacy compliance function worldwide. Reporting to the Chief Compliance Officer, you will lead Western Digital’s data privacy compliance team to design and implement global privacy law requirements, mitigate associated risk and instill a culture of privacy throughout Western Digital’s worldwide business and operations. You will interface directly with corporate and operational leadership to develop, implement, maintain, and ensure a best-in-class data privacy compliance program and help manage risk throughout the organization. As the Company’s data protection officer you will also serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role you will be responsible for developing, implementing and leading an effective global data privacy program and team. Specific duties include:

Monitor legal and regulatory changes that impact the company’s business across global jurisdictions

  • Provide strategic guidance and regular feedback to the Chief Compliance Officer regarding the design and operation of Western Digital’s global data privacy compliance program, its adequacy and effectiveness, key risks and issues, and emerging trends
  • Influence and drive global data privacy compliance across the organization by leading a cross-functional, executive-level data privacy steering committee
  • Develop strong partnerships and work closely with business leaders across the enterprise, including Operations, Engineering, Sales and other assurance functions, to develop and implement privacy risk mitigation strategies, practices and procedures that support compliance objectives
  • Work collaboratively with Information Technology, Information Security, Legal, Human Resources and other key stakeholders to further Western Digital’s global data privacy goals and objectives
  • Establish a privacy governance framework to manage data use in compliance with the GDPR, CCPA and other applicable regulations
  • Design, draft and implement policies and procedures tailored to legal, business and regulatory requirements
  • Elevate awareness throughout the global enterprise by overseeing online and instructor-led privacy-related training, communications and other privacy culture-related initiatives
  • Advise business clients on privacy-related inquiries, risks and issues
  • Monitor compliance with policies, guidelines, and processes and follow up on non-compliance
  • Manage and remediate data breach incidents involving personal information
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and liaison for external supervisory and data protection authorities and regulatory agencies on all data protection matters
  • Oversee compliance programs and procedures for Art. 35 Data Protection Impact Assessments, Art. 15 Data Subject Access Requests, Art. 30 Records of Processing, and Standard Contractual Clauses for data protection and internal data transfer agreements
  • Assist with privacy-related aspects of internal investigations
  • Attract top talent and develop a high functioning, engaged and collaborative team
  • Define and deliver on annual privacy program objectives through effective management and engagement of direct and matrixed privacy team members
  • Manage privacy program budget and work closely with outside counsel and other Company advisors to work within budget

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • JD degree plus 10 years of practice in a law firm or as an in-house attorney; or BS degree plus 12 years of relevant experience
  • Deep data privacy expertise and demonstrated leadership in complex, global data privacy matters
  • Privacy and data protection certifications
  • Familiarity with privacy management platforms (e.g., OneTrust)
  • Skilled client advisor who delivers solutions with professional presence, persuasive oral and written communication, and crisp, clear presentations
  • Passion for leading, managing and developing talent in high-functioning teams
  • Excellent collaboration skills and demonstrated team player
  • Effective organizational and analytical skills and a demonstrated record of cross-functional collaboration and influence
  • Integrity, professionalism and a keen understanding of the sensitivity and confidentiality of the work is a must
  • Demonstrated ability to be proactive and manage multiple projects simultaneously, focus on critical priorities and apply appropriate judgment in escalating competing priorities and substantive issues
  • Strong work ethic and ability to produce consistently-high quality work under tight deadlines
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/CIPM/CIPT) or equivalent evidence of privacy and data security proficiency
  • Experience working inside a global company is preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in a global environment and sensitivity to and an understanding of cultural differences around the globe
  • Ability to travel, including international travel, is required
