SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Brewmaster, the Lab Technician works within department and company guidelines to manage quality systems to assure that the beer produced during the entire process meets our specifications. Develops, implements, executes, and improves methods to conduct day-to-day product and process analysis to provide information and to make informed product and process quality decisions.

Lab Technician will typically conduct analysis involving one, or more of the following disciplines: Analytical Chemistry, Microbiology, Sensory, Instrumentation/Metrology, Water Chemistry, Product Field Quality, Product Safety and/or Quality System. This position will have full or shared ownership of their assigned area and they will be capable of operating with minimal guidance and direction from their manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties include, but are not limited to:

Collecting aseptic samples from the brewery at various stages in the brewing process

Performing chemical and microbial analyses of water, wort, yeast, beer, and brewery environment including plating, rapid PCR (Invisible Sentinel), and preparing media.

Maintaining and enforcing an orderly laboratory environment

Maintaining accurate data documentation

Maintaining and calibrating analytical equipment

Gathering and analyzing data, and preparing reports relating data to brewing process

Performing DO audits on packaging lines.

Working with all brewery departments to ensure consistent, high-quality product and efficient release of packaged beer

Communicating with brewery personnel and management regarding quality control issues

Promoting and advocating for continuous quality and safety improvements

Maintaining Labs SDS binder, and coordinating the updates with the company SDS binder.

Developing new QA/QC procedures and programs with guidance from Brewmaster

Independent work on special projects with minimal guidance from Brewmaster.

Ability to prioritize of special projects, normal duties, and unforeseen QA/QC needs.

Designing, executing, and reporting on experiments and trials

Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in a production laboratory environment

Excellent skills in communicating with a variety of audiences, both verbally and in writing

Proficient with database, word processing, and spreadsheet software

Familiar with the entire brewing process, from grain to glass

Proficient with general laboratory instruments and techniques (e.g., pH meter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, densitometer, serial dilutions, pipetting, aseptic technique, etc.)

Familiar with good manufacturing, laboratory, and documentation practices

Able to work 8 hour shifts, 5 days per week, and occasionally overtime

Able to work safely with hazardous chemicals

Have fine attention to detail

Able to work independently on multiple projects at one time

Able to meet production, quality and safety standards

REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Bachelors Degree in Natural Sciences (e.g. microbiology, bio-chemistry, food science, etc.) or equivalent experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to do the following:

Stand and walk for long periods of time

Walk, kneel, bend, stand, and climb stairs

Lifts up to 60 lbs and manipulate up to 160 lbs

Works in confined spaces and around complex machinery

Stoops, squats, kneels, and crawls for purposes of collecting samples, gathering data and cleaning

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This is a fast-paced environment and the noise level is usually moderate to high.

Environment is wet, noisy, and non-temperature controlled.
