Please Note: Community Health Worker Specialist is the advanced journey level for those with one or more years of experience related to public health equivalent to a Community Health Worker II.

Fluent bilingual Spanish/English skills are highly desired, but not required for all positions. An examination will be conducted prior to employment to confirm skill level for bilingual positions. The bilingual premium pay begins upon the assignment of bilingual work.

Reporting to Supervising Public Health Nurses within the COVID-19 Unit, these extra-help, temporary Community Health Worker Specialist positions will provide coordination and leadership to teams of Community Health Workers (CHWs) providing Contact Tracing and Hotline services within the unit. The Community Health Worker Specialist will review work, providing training and assistance, act as a resource for questions, and provide feedback on employee performance to supervisors.

Duties for these positions include:Conducting contact tracing and case investigations independently and with minimal support or supervision

Performing case work from initiation to completion within a timely fashion

Seeking out and educating team members about community services and resources that are specific to meeting or alleviating those needs

Acting as a lead for CHWs in organized and specialized teams

Leading team meetings and prioritizing emerging problems

Helping teams to problem solve issues

Initiating contact for specialized teams with departmental program staff and/or community organizations to respond to changing conditions and needs

Conducting training for team members, providing motivational coaching for team members, and providing input to supervisors for evaluations and appropriate assignments

Demonstrating leadership in reviewing and assisting CHWs in learning and improving their use of technical and electronic mechanisms used in contact tracing and case investigations

Providing input to match skills and abilities of CHWs with appropriate level of team assignmentsThe ideal candidates for these positions will:Possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities. and be able to work with a variety of people

Be detailed, organized, and able to assist and multitask while helping other employees

Possess computer skills with the ability to electronically access and input data

Be able to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse, underserved populationsIdeally, these positions will work 30-40 hours per week, both remotely at home and in the office as needed. Work schedule will be set by the supervisor and based on operational needs. Schedule may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Incumbents are required to wear a mask or face covering while in the office.

EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT

Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Extra-help employees may be hired on either a temporary or intermittent basis. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Intermittent, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of 1,380 hours within any twelve month consecutive period. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.
