Job summary

In conjunction with Therapy professionals, this position assists Carmel Valley Manor Residents in the design of individualized training programs and the safe and appropriate use of Fitness Center pool/spa and fitness equipment. The Health Fitness Specialist will evaluate Residents of Carmel Valley Manor and their fitness needs. Will participate in the joint creation of an individualized Resident wellness plan. Also, will create and provide group fitness classes to meet the various needs and interests of our Residents. This individual will care for the facility and equipment and offer input as to equipment care and replacement. Will supervise, monitor and assist Residents using the Fitness Center and will participate on the Fitness committee.

Essential duties and responsibilities: Include the following; other duties may be assigned.

Creates an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the fitness center. Ensures an atmosphere of cooperation.

Establishes exercise and wellness programs for Residents cleared by a physician to use the Fitness Center, with or without limitations, and ensures the exercise program complies with any applicable limitations.

Communicates with Therapists regarding any new or unusual needs of Residents.

Participates in Fall prevention and balance program.

Participates with Therapy Professionals and Clinic with identification and assistance of those with movement challenges.

Modifies exercise programs for Residents when appropriate.

Participates with those Residents in Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing in their individualized program where appropriate.

Maintains and organizes the workout/exercise program sheet cabinet and maintain monthly attendance records.

Assists Residents with filling out workout/exercise program sheets.

Assists Residents with the proper and safe use of the Fitness Center equipment, such as equipment adjustments and settings, tightening bolts and lubricating equipment if necessary.

Maintains the Fitness Center facility and equipment in a clean, safe and good working condition, with housekeeping support provided by housekeeping staff. Ability to communicate effectively with other departments/disciplines.

Coordinates the necessary service and maintenance requirements for the Fitness Center equipment.

Together with Therapy Professionals and Director of Health Services, identify replacement equipment for the Fitness Center as part of the capital budget process.

Maintains the Fitness Center's roster including visitors, daily.

Identifies and promotes individualized Fitness and Wellness programs for Residents that may be outside the Fitness, Pool/Spa building.

Consolidates the daily rosters into a quarterly report and submits them to the Director of Health Services.

Communicates directly with Fitness Center Resident advisory committee chair and attends the quarterly committee meetings, providing reports on Fitness Center usage and any other related issues.

Conducts and/or coordinates group fitness classes such as Tai Chi, balance, yoga, dance and others as desired by Residents or directed by Therapists or Director of Health Services.

Responds to emergencies in the Fitness Center.

Qualifications (Education and/or Experience):

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Specialty certifications a plus.

Must have at least an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education or similar degree.

Must have at least one-year experience in the fitness or health care services industry or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in personal training preferred but not required.

Must be comfortable with the Geriatric Population as well as collaborating with Therapists and Health Team.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language and carry out oral and written instructions.

Must have a current Adult CPR Certificate.

Must have the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

Must have the ability to deal tactfully and work harmoniously with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, vendors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age and of good moral character.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision. The employee must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday. The employee must be able to lift Residents and physical training supplies.

Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability to be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of relating to and working with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times, hostile people within the facility.
