The Human Resources/Safety Assistant will support HR and Safety programs to ensure compliance required by the company and regulatory agencies. Coordinate and implement injury and illness prevention programs, support related employee training, investigate accidents and conduct crew & field inspections. Assist with new and re-hire employment registrations with field personnel.

This position will require a flexible schedule including Saturdays and holidays. This position is based in Salinas, California with field operations in Santa Cruz County and Monterey County.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Includes, but not limited to, the following:

Assist with new and re-hire employee registrations for field operations and ensure timely and accurate documentation including I-9 form and new hire documents.

Conduct new and re-hire employee orientation including company policies and safety programs.

Communicate, distribute and facilitate new company policies, practices or guidelines as need arises.

Maintain informed on HR and safety regulatory changes; maintain required postings, binders and documentation.

Conduct weekly compliance inspections at crew and ranch locations, report deficiencies and ensure timely follow-up of corrective actions.

Assist with accident response, investigation and documentation; identify and recommend preventative measures and corrective actions.

Assist with coordination and transportation of employees to the clinic; and provide timely information to the Workers Compensation Coordinator.

Facilitate effective and timely communication with field employees, Foreman, and Supervisors.

Educate, motivate and train field personnel in good housekeeping practices and safe work procedures.

Maintain black boxes, posting binders, and first aid kits; and ensure timely delivery of safety supplies to crews as needed.

Record and maintain records for chemical and fertilizer applications.

Assist with regulatory compliance audits including HR, safety and food safety.

Perform assigned projects and reports promptly.

Assist HR Director in a variety of duties as needed.

Qualifications:

College degree in related field or specialized designation preferred and/or a minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in human resources and occupational safety.

Experienced in agricultural environment or strawberry industry preferred.

Must be bilingual and biliterate (English/Spanish)

Must be computer proficient – MS Outlook, Work and Excel 

Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to speak to large group of employees.

Must be well organized, comfortable working independently, and manage a project from its initiation to completion with minimal supervision.

Positive attitude with willingness to pro-actively solve issues.

Ability to carry out defined procedures with specific instructions and abilities to learn new duties with minimal repetition.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and peers.

Handle confidential information in strict confidence and with great sensitivity.
