Hours: 40 hours / week, non-exempt

Salary: $19.00 - $22.00 / hour

About the Agency

The Monterey County Rape Crisis Center (MCRCC) is a nonprofit agency whose mission is to provide ongoing advocacy, support and healing for all victims and survivors of sexual assault, human trafficking and child abuse; and to prevent sexual violence in our community through education.

Overview

The Child Abuse Prevention Program Educator is a member of the Prevention Education Team which facilitates child abuse and sexual assault prevention education to middle school and high school age students, parents, teachers and staff. Reporting to the Prevention Education Director, the Child Abuse Prevention Program Educator collaborates with other staff members to support the work of the agency and to keep informed of all agency programs and activities.

Child Abuse Prevention Program

Since 1985 the Monterey County Rape Crisis Center has been providing free child abuse prevention classes to students in kindergarten, third, and sixth grade. MCRCC has also presented to parent classes, local churches, group homes, and summer camps. We typically reach approximately 10,000 students a year and serve roughly 50 schools throughout the county.

Presentations provide information about child safety and abuse that is age appropriate. Parent previews are provided before elementary school presentations upon request. Classes are provided by trained staff in English and Spanish.

Major Functions

Coordinate and facilitate presentations to elementary school students and parents about child abuse prevention

Provide a range of services to school students, parents, teachers, and school administrators including policy advocacy and individual follow-ups;

Develop and expand prevention program curricula for elementary and middle school levels;

Assess prevention programs on an ongoing basis and update information and materials as necessary (ex: pamphlets, website, teaching tools, etc.);

Complete Family and Childrens Services (FCS) reports as needed with awareness and sensitivity of the impact on child/family/school of such reports;

Expand and maintain relationships with school staff to promote MCRCCs child abuse prevention program;

Work closely with the Prevention Team to maintain and strengthen MCRCC relationships with community partners;

Plan, coordinate, and implement Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month activities (April) in collaboration with the Prevention and Community Engagement Teams;

Compile monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and yearly reports for Board of Directors and various funding sources;

Assess prevention program on an ongoing basis and update information and materials/curriculum as necessary;

Provide confidential crisis intervention services; including peer-counseling, information and referral, and accompaniment to medical and legal services as requested to ensure the well-being and safety of the survivor.

Administrative Duties:

Collect and maintain statistics regarding presentations into agency database;

Prepare reports as required;

Remain current with new legislation, reporting laws and child abuse research in general;

Perform agency and program administrative and operational tasks, as needed;

Uphold and adhere to the policies and bylaws of the organization;

Report regularly to the Prevention Program Director and otherwise to insure that s/he is fully informed of all child abuse prevention program activities;

Attend meetings, conferences, agency functions, fundraisers and events, and other job-related events as required by the Prevention Program Director and

Carry out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director/Deputy Director/Prevention Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

BA/BS in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Communications, or related field or two year minimum relevant experience;

Excellent public speaking skills;

Ability to effectively present sensitive topic materials to a wide range of audiences;

Enjoy working with children & young adults;

Understanding of child abuse and sexual assault, and commitment to ending sexual violence;

Excellent oral and written communication skills;

Must have the ability to establish rapport with diverse audiences, and be sensitive to diverse cultural groups;

Familiarity with Monterey County and community resources;

Strong planning and organizational skills;

Strong leadership skills;

Ability to work independently and as part of a team;

Certified Sexual Assault Counselor, or willingness to complete training;

Willingness to serve as staff backup resource person after hours for advocates on a rotating basis;

Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, climb stairs, and sit for the duration of SART/CART exams (4+ hours)

Ability to use relevant technology;

Willing to work flexible hours including some evenings, early mornings and weekends as needed;

Must have reliable transportation, a valid drivers license, and carry vehicle insurance;

Oral and written fluency in English and Spanish required for one of two positions, preferred for both.
