JOB SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will operate and maintain the fiscal integrity of the original books of entry and fiscal records and subsidiary ledgers of the business. This person will establish and maintain standard operating procedures for internal control of all accounting and bookkeeping functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Maintain all internal financial controls to safeguard assets and assure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions by implementing disciplines of internal audits, controls and checks across all departments.

Develop, improve and issue timely monthly financial and budget variance reports in concert with the Chief Financial Officer, taking responsibility for meeting the Month & Year End close deadlines.

Generate specialized financial schedules and reports to use for reporting needs and analysis.

Supervise the Finance department staff to ensure that all accounting functions are executed in compliance with company policy & procedures

Ensure timely and accurate departmental operations including oversight of check runs, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger entries and reconciliations.

Promote within the Finance department effective workflow, high morale, active communication, and strong staff development

Identify, develop, implement and document in writing all department policies and procedures.

Manage the productivity, accuracy and timeliness of daily activities of accounts payable, cash disbursements, accounts receivable, invoicing/billing, customer collections, payroll, inventory, fixed assets, cost accounting, general investment and other entity accounting.

Provide oversight and guidance as related to fiscal matters regarding all management reporting of donated goods retail operations.

Provide and assist with financial analysis and the tools to better evaluate company ventures or special projects, programs, capital expenditures, product or project costing, and certain contract budgets.

In concert with Chief Financial Officer, plan and coordinate preparation of annual operating budget and departmental business plans

Assist and take responsibility as appropriate for the management of commercial banking and merchant processing relationships.

Interface with and assist in relationships of outside audit firm(s), banks and lessors, casualty/liability insurance agent(s), credit card companies, and collection agencies.

Prepare and direct the preparation of year-end audit papers and work closely with designated external auditors during the annual financial audits.

SECONDARY DUTIES

Act for and substitute for the Chief Financial Officer in his/her absence.

Complete special accounting-related projects as required/requested.

Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED

Bachelor's Degree in accounting or equivalent; Master's degree and/or CPA license preferred, but not required.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQ'D

Valid California Class C driver's license.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Minimum of Five (5) years of progressively increasing responsibility with supervisorial experience related to financial reporting and financial management in an accounting role at a level of Accounting Manager or above. Nonprofit experience highly desirable.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Broad knowledge of all phases of general accounting practices and principles.

Familiarity with GAAP (Generally-Accepted Accounting Principles) and basic double-entry accounting.

Detailed familiarity with Microsoft Excel and accounting software (familiarity with Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics General Ledger and Paycom Payroll Software preferred).

Knowledge of grant billing from government funding sources and OMB-133 audits is a plus but not required

Familiarity with Goodwill's mission, general company policies/procedures, and the organizations accounting/finance procedures, (this may be learned on-the-job)

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

Ability to work with senior (Vice President) levels of management.

Ability to facilitate good communications between employees and manage through interpersonal and professional communication

Ability to deal with others beyond giving or receiving instructions, including the ability to understand other's viewpoints and adapt to the situation if appropriate

Ability to reason, make generalizations, evaluations and decisions based on both sensory/judgmental and measurable/verifiable criteria.

Ability to accept responsibility for the supervision and work and direction of staff.

Ability to organize and utilize time effectively despite interruptions.

Ability to adhere strictly to company policies regarding confidentiality.

Ability to drive a vehicle in the transaction of company business. This requires a good driving record and may require the ability to provide evidence of personal vehicle liability insurance.

Ability to adhere to safe work practices as documented in Company safety policies; ability to report safety hazards/accidents promptly to supervisor or safety committee member.
