Minimum qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Physics, a quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

15 years of experience building benchtop optical, electrical, mechanical setups, and measurement automation, or 5 years with a PhD.

4 years of experience modeling, measuring, and analyzing data for system/component performance.

3 years of experience in Python, MATLAB, C, C, or Go.

Preferred qualifications:PhD in Physics or a quantitative discipline.

10 years of experience working with a subset of lasers, fibers/single mode waveguides, polarization optics, precision optomechanics, photodetectors, or diffractive optics.

6 years of experience in experimental quantum computing, atomic physics, optical interferometry, ultra-fast lasers.

4 years of experience with electromagnetic simulation (FDTD, FDFD, FEA, RCWA) or Fourier optics or optical cavity design or mechanical resonator simulation (including frequency stabilization cavities, NEMS, MEMS, whispering gallery modes resonators).

In this role, you will be responsible for advancing the measurement capabilities of both the Waveguide Research and Development (R&D) team and the Research team in the Hardware R&D group. In this role, you will understand the new optical components and systems at a fundamental level which will allow you to create new ways of characterizing them both individually and in production. You will work closely with the Waveguide with both the Waveguide Metrology and Design R&D team, Waveguide Engineering team, Design Simulation team, and other optical researchers to develop ways to measure parts both in terms of performance and simplicity. You will work closely with suppliers to implement new processes and capabilities using information gathered from measurement tools you create. Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Our Devices & Services team combines the best of Google AI, Software, and Hardware to create radically helpful experiences for users. We research, design, and develop new technologies and hardware to make our user's interaction with computing faster, seamless, and more powerful. Whether finding new ways to capture and sense the world around us, advancing form factors, or improving interaction methods, the Devices & Services team is making people's lives better through technology.Leverage your deep knowledge and experience with metrology and physics to create new ways of measuring new optical components.

Create a framework for evaluating new optical components and fabrication processes both at the single part and supplier level.

Build sources, fixturing, automation and control pipelines to evaluate component performance using both custom and off the shelf parts both individually and in collaboration with the mechanical and fixtures team.

Work with the Engineering team to transfer knowledge and speed up implementation of new techniques.

Provide guidance to both the research and engineering teams on measurement science.
