Microbiology Teaching Lab Technician (Carlsbad)

Vacancy expired!

Willingness to work part time in August, September, and October. 200 hrs at $17.50 an hour plus any applicable benefits.

Background: A number of courses for the medical students include labs or demonstrations. These are performed by staff working on behalf of Medical Education. The Medical Microbiology course includes a set of labs in which all medical students are required to participate.

Minimum qualifications: BS with five years of experience, or preferably an MS with two years of experience. PhDs also accepted. Experience with laboratory testing of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Experience with handling pathogens in BSL2. Experience with teaching bacteriology labs. Experience with preparing explanatory texts for handling and testing bacteria in a laboratory setting. Experience supervising graduate students assisting in the lab.

Description: The course consists of a total of 6 labs for half of the medical students each time: 1) Blood and Soft Tissue Infections, 2) Gastrointestinal and Urinary Tract Infections, 3) Respiratory Infections. The Technician prepares and uploads the patient cases and the quizzes that the students take during these labs. The Technician works closely with the three Clinicians who attend the sessions. Together they create the quizzes, which are presented in Canvas. The Technician plays an important role because the designee has to know what it is practical to do in a lab course setting, which the clinicians are unlikely to have had practical experience with. The Technician is responsible for ordering all supplies and preparing media and tests. The Technician maintains all bacterial strains and validates the tests the students will be conducting (e.g. Oxidase test, Catalase test). Work for the Technician is spread over a three month period, starting 6 weeks prior to the lab, when work begins to validate the assays. Two weeks prior to the first lab, the Micro Lab coordinator, the faculty designated as course director, and the instructors will meet and discuss any last issues/questions.

The Coordinator supervises 3 MD/PhD students, which each act as instructors for small groups of medical students during each lab (the instructors change every year). In addition, there is a Clinician in attendance during each lab day. Two days before each lab the coordinator meets with the instructors, Course Director, and the Clinician to discuss once more the cases, quizzes and then prep for that particular lab day.

For implementing Canvas, software and web related tasks, the Technician works with Angel Meza. The Technician also schedules Biohazard waste pickup with EH&S.
