Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager and guided by the policies and procedures of Desert AIDS Project (DAP), the Behavioral Health Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) has the clinical responsibility for developing and maintaining a high standard of patient care and daily clinical operations. The Behavioral Health LVN will play a critical role in the patient experience including optimizing clinic flow and working collaboratively with the team to create a patient centered environment.

Job Type: Full time / part time

FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-exempt

Reports to: Behavioral Health Manager

Essential Functions

Perform the day to day operations of the Behavioral Health Clinic as directed by the Behavioral Health Manager;

Perform permitted procedures under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager and/or physicians; assume clinical responsibility for administration of medications/vaccines, lab result review and monitoring, treatments and procedures pertinent to adult care such as ear irrigations, wound care and patient education;

Ensure patient safety;

Conduct patient appointment reminder calls;

Performing missed appointment follow up workflow;

Direct patients to exam rooms;

Gather patient health maintenance data;

Obtain vital signs;

Conduct health screens as assigned;

Assist with patient flow during clinic hours;

Maintain exam rooms on a daily basis;

Check equipment to insure proper functioning;

Prepare exam rooms between patients and between clinics;

Perform venipuncture;

Administer vaccinations;

Maintain laboratory logs;

Communicate positively with patients and outside parties regarding agency programs; this individual will utilize his/her excellent customer service and communication skills on a daily basis via phone/electronic contact, mail correspondence, and personal contact with both internal and external customers;

This individual supports the standards of the policies and procedures of the practice, and is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of pharmacology and competency in modes of administration, and complies with all Ambulatory Services and DAP policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and administrative and clinical practice;

Communicate with pharmacies regarding prescription orders;

Be able to effectively review lab reports with patients;

Serve as patient liaison;

Work closely with Case Management and Home Care staff to ensure continuity of care;

Complete all paperwork accurately and efficiently (i.e., vouchers, X-ray request, special procedure request(s), TARS, etc.);

Request and retrieve client files as needed;

Assist clients with appointments to referral sources;

Answer telephone and relay messages;

Assist with supervision of Certified Medical Assistants;

Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Graduate from a high school, or possession of a certificate of proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or possession of a G.E.D. certificate.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience working in behavioral health;

Experience working with LGBTQ community;

Experience working in FQHC;

Experience working with patients with substance use disorders.

License(s) and Certification(s)

Active Licensed Vocational Nurse licensure in the State of California;

I.V. Certification;

Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross accredited BLS certification.

Working Environment and Physical Demands

This job operates in a clinical set and requires frequent times of sitting, standing, walking, speaking and repetitive motion. Ability to lift up to 24 pounds. Job usually involves contact with patients or patient specimens. Exposure to blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens is possible. Access to patient protected health information required.
