Maxar is currently seeking an Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in Pasadena, CA. In this role, you will work on the frontend of programs' lifecycle, generating or deriving critical system requirements in order to identify primary design drivers. Additional efforts include evaluating sub-systems' expected performance, and ultimately creating proof-of-concept first articles for validation for proposed solutions. Typical customers include NASA, JPL, DARPA, and other government/commercial entities as well as internal stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate system requirements based on mission objectives
  • Evaluate system requirements against internal and external technologies for mission success
  • Identify critical design drivers based on system requirements
  • Assess scope and level of effort needed to achieve design and/or delivery of proposed solutions
  • Model proof-of-concept designs in Solidworks
  • Produce technical documents and/or presentations for design solutions
  • Lead or participate in technical studies preceding program kick-off
  • Design and build mockups, prototypes, and/or first article units for proposed solutions


Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have at least a Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, mechatronics, or robotics engineering. Relevant physical and applied science degrees will also be considered
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in design, drafting, and/or AI&T for spacecraft, aircraft, automotive, or other mass-critical structures
  • Demonstrated experience with CAD modeling (ideally in Solidworks)
  • Comfortable working independently, but also gathering input from interdisciplinary resources such as mechanical, electrical, and software engineers
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and apply technologies to critical design drivers


Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in mechanical, aerospace, mechatronics, or robotics engineering. Relevant physical and applied science degrees will also be considered
  • 8+ years' experience in design, drafting, and/or AI&T for spacecraft, aircraft, automotive, or other mass-critical structures
  • Hands-on skills such as machining, soldering, mechanical assembly, electromechanical integration, etc.
  • Demonstrated expertise designing, building, and testing rotary actuators/gearboxes or general deployment mechanisms
  • Familiarity with space mechanisms lubrication, drivetrain gearing, and bearing selection principles
  • Working knowledge of motors, actuators, sensors, controls, and/or robotic system
  • Familiarity using structural analysis software tools and ability to perform initial sizing using hand calculations, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Ability to assume role as sub-system owner and/or lead multidisciplinary team for fulfillment of programmatic requirements
