Founded in 1965, Shasta Head Start is dedicated to providing comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, disabilities, and mental health services to low-income children and families. Shasta Head Start’s 285 staff serve nearly 1000 children and families in Shasta, Siskiyou, and Trinity counties.

Position Summary

We are currently looking for individuals who are highly committed and dedicated to the teaching of young children. Do you understand the need for quality preschool educators in the lives of young children? Would you like to become a vital part of their early learning and development? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our ECE Trainee program with Shasta Head Start.

During this 12-month training program, ECE Trainees will be attending ECE classes at Shasta College. Tuition for the 12 core ECE units will be paid for by Shasta Head Start (at the in-state tuition rate) along with all necessary textbooks, student/campus fees, and any other approved applicable fees. You will also receive on the job training on how to become a quality preschool teacher, participate in job rotations to learn each facet of our program, and have the opportunity to participate in our training and development program. By the end of the 12-month training program each Trainee will have had the opportunity to develop and implement one lesson plan, provide one classroom group activity, and participate in the assessment of individual children.

Qualifications/Requirements

High school diploma or GED

18 years of age or older

Strong interest in Early Childhood Education. Preference will be given to individuals with experience working with children ages zero to five

Ability to enroll in an Early Childhood Education program within one month of hire

Ability to complete 12 core Early Childhood Education units from a regionally accredited college or university within 12 months of hire

Positive and enthusiastic

Flexible and willing to take on a variety of tasks and assignments

Pre-employment requirements:

o Valid California driver license and clean DMV record

o Criminal background check required

o Pre-employment strength assessment

o Pre-employment drug test

o Pre-employment TB test

o Up to date records of pertussis, measles, and influenza vaccines

Responsibilities/Duties

Assist classroom staff in maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy work environment

Support classroom staff in the implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum, lessons, and assessment process

Model appropriate behavior and interact in a positive, friendly and courteous manner with children, staff, families and community volunteers in order to build and foster responsive relationships

Complete one curriculum project during training program, including developing an original lesson plan, delivering the material, and evaluating the results

Facilitate hands-on activities in the classroom, indoor and outdoor play, and meal time routines.

Participate in mentorship and coaching opportunities

Attend internal training and development to enhance understanding of early childhood education

The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lifts 50 pounds from floor to waist. The employee must be able to push/pull up to 75 pounds horizontally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
