Innovations Academy "Powerfully creating our lives through self-expression, compassionate connection, and purposeful learning"
The mission statement above speaks to the wonderful work we do each day at Innovations
Academy. This work is unlike traditional neighborhood schools and we love the work we do. We
are seeking candidates for our 8th grade class for the 2021-22 school year. If you choose to
apply for this position, you are a person whose practices align with constructivist teaching. You
enjoy working hard and being dedicated to high quality teaching practices. Each day you will be
given the opportunity to practice the craft that you have been developing for years. You will
create a classroom community that supports its members to learn and grow. Within this
community your students will engage in challenging and exciting work with real world
connection and purpose. You and your students will be enthused by the learning.
The foundation for learning at IA is inquiry through project learning. The ideal candidate will
have experience with project learning that truly focuses on student inquiry. Student voice, choice
and wonder are at the center of our projects. Classes go on field study experiences monthly and
invite professional experts to support their project learning. Projects integrate subject matter
creatively and student products demonstrate learning in a variety of ways. When not doing
project work, students are continually invested in their learning through other hands-on active
strategies for understanding content and learning skills. Worksheets and packets are not a part of
the repertoire. It is all about learning through doing.
Innovations Academy has a strong social emotional foundation. We draw on a variety of
programs to facilitate student skill development with communication, problem-solving, conflict
resolution and self-regulation. We are not behaviorists and therefore do not use any punishment
or reward system. Instead, we rely exclusively on our own communication and connection skills
to build mutual respect through powerful relationships that drive classroom management.
Parents are integrally involved in our community. They work in classrooms, visit and observe
and want to be invited to be a part of their children’s work, especially in the lower grades.
Effective parent communication is essential. The parent-teacher team is a powerful tool at our
school.
We love teachers at I.A. and will support you professionally by respecting your ideas and
creativity. Teachers work collaboratively with each other. Teachers are expected to thoroughly
plan, deliver and assess learning opportunities and then reflect conscientiously about their own
practice, inviting and welcoming feedback from others in order to improve all the time. Teachers
