SaaS Start Up Needs FIRST EVER Technical Writer!

Vacancy expired!

Hello! We’ll start by introducing ourselves. We’re Sendlane! A SaaS startup that’s disrupting an entire industry by influencing the way people learn about and use email marketing automation. Established in 2015, we’ve grown year over year and that’s been possible because we are constantly looking to out-do ourselves and evolve.

With our headquarters found in sunny San Diego, CA, our team’s dedication to making Sendlane what it is today is humbling which is why we’re looking for that next “special someone” to help take us to the next level. That’s where you come in! Yes, you.

Listen, we get it. Job hunting is 100% THE worst. So, we're happy to tell you the search is over! You did it! You finally found the company of your dreams. Go ahead and give your boss "the finger", flip your desk, knock over your cubicle and march your happy self on over to Sendlane HQ! Just kiddingwe have to invite you. Please don't just show up.

Anyway, we are on the hunt for our very first Technical Writer

Up until this point, we’ve been trying to do our own technical writing and we wouldn’t say it’s baaaaad but it’s definitely becoming more and more obvious that we do not possess the appropriate skill set to keep doing it ourselves. In typical startup fashion we worked with what we had but now we’ve found ourselves in a phase of hypergrowth. That’s great because it means we’re doing something right but it also means we need to capitalize NOW! Part of that is admitting it’s time to get our sht together and present a bit more professionally.

So, that is why we’re looking for you specifically. While we’re on the subject, let’s have a chat about you.

This position is all about systematic order so you are an innately patient person because there’s likely to be little deviation. To say that you’re highly accountable and consistent is an understatement - few people can focus like you can! Fairly analytical, you are insanely detail oriented and are great at communicating abstract ideas or complex information in simpler terms. At the end of the day, that is the very essence of this position, isn’t it? As we mentioned earlier, we took our best whack at doing our own technical writing but it’s time to level up. The goal for this position is simple: Enable our customers to grow their business through concise reference guides. As simple as that truly is, it does still come with a pretty thorough definition so let’s get right to it.

As THE resident technical writer at Sendlane, you will be the author of all trusted resources for our customers, owning the technical artifacts of Sendlane and relaying them in a language that the common person can understand. Working closely with the Customer Success, Product and Engineering teams, you will build out a knowledge base consisting of top-notch technical articles, internal playbooks, tutorials, FAQs and product documentation for our website. Maintaining a “customer first” mentality, you will edit, clarify and proofread documentation written by others and coach up the non-writers of the group (us) to improve! To reiterate, you must be able to communicate complex information clearly and concisely (but we already know you’re awesome at that).

You’re probably not the type that wants to read fluff so we’ll stop ourselves here and give you the bulleted expectations of what you’d be doing day-to-day in this role:

- Work on the Customer Success department and report to the VP of Customer Success

- Maintain a customer-first mentality, producing documentation with unified examples, consistent style, and stellar quality

- Take complex information and turn it into engaging and easy-to-understand instructions

- Help customers grow their business and gain a sense of expertise through your content

- Create customer-facing documentation for feature launches

- Build a knowledge base

- Identify customer knowledge gaps through analyzing the product journey and user experience

- Collaborate with Engineering, Marketing, Customer Success, and other internal teams to gather and research relevant information to enable successful documentation.

- Experience successfully managing multiple projects and deadlines

We should mention that having an understanding of instructional design principles would be a great box to check. Also, having experience using an online CSM, HubSpots knowledge base and/or Confluence is a major WIN!

Overall, that’s pretty much the job. It was a lot to unpack but it’s pretty straightforward, right?

Let’s take a break from all this job description stuff and talk about what’s in it for you! That said, we strive to ensure that our employees have the best experience possible (while still remembering that you are here to do a job). COVID put a major damper on the fun we offer in-office but we’ve adjusted pretty well! Here are the benefits we offer:

- Health/Dental/Vision - 70% to 100% paid for by us (depends on the plan you pick)

- Parental Leave - New parent? Congrats! We pay you for 6 weeks!

- 401k - We match up to 4% (caveat: you need to be with us for 1+ years before this kicks in)

- Flexible PTO - Take what you need when you need it.

- We pay you to GO AWAY - $1000 bonus for taking time off!

- Equipment for your home office (including a MacBook and giant monitor)

- Monthly remote team building and consistent team engagement (we won’t force you to do Yoga with us but we will challenge you to do your best impression of the Spice Girls for $100 to Amazon)

When the pandemic is in the rearview mirror and we’re all in therapy, working through our new founded agoraphobia, we plan to remain “remote first”. This means that we’ll have our Office Headquarters open and available to anyone who wants to come in but if you’d prefer to remain a full or partially remote employee, we’ll enable you to do that!

Alas, someday we’ll be able to go back to that beautiful 12,000 sq ft space and when we do, you’ll get to reap the benefits of a fully stocked breakroom, beer and wine after 4 o’clock, standing desks, catered lunches, team trips, ping pong and a spinny chair of your very own (with 18 adjustment points!) AND, of course, actually socializing in person with people - do you remember what that’s like? Neither do we.

If all this sounds like a position that’s up your alley then we definitely want to hear from you!

Head on over to Sendlane's Careers Page and apply!

We'll be in touch asap!
