Truth in Recruitment is a project of the Santa Barbara Friends (Quaker) Meeting, a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Our goal is to educate students, families, and school districts about alternatives to military careers, inform families of their children's privacy rights, and advocate for policies regulating recruiter presence on campuses.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Executive Director should have experience in community organizing and have some knowledge of military, college, and job employer recruitment in schools. They should have an understanding of local school district policies. Their experience should include cultivating youth leadership, community organizing, and communication with families. The candidate should have experience or willingness to learn about engaging with school staff, school boards, and administrators around issues affecting students. Skills include public speaking, writing, networking, fundraising, social media outreach, and the ability to work in collaboration with multiple groups and individuals of differing opinions.

Professional development, on-boarding, and training will be provided.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

● Work with staff in North and South Santa Barbara County to manage community organizer interns and volunteers throughout the County. 


● Meet monthly with TIR Steering Committee and subcommittees.

● Organize community groups and develop strategies to regulate recruitment on campuses. 


● Make presentations to students and families informing them of their right to opt out of the release of student contact information to recruiters and about laws related to recruitment in schools. 


● Facilitate meetings with these communities to draft specific policies for their district and strategize approaches to school boards and K-12 school administrations. 


● Connect local groups of interest with county, state and national networks of counter recruitment 
organizations. 


● Organize forums and trainings county-wide.

● Contact and meet with school district administrators and individual school board members.

● Collaborate on writing fundraising letters of inquiry and grant proposals and plan fundraising events.

QUALIFICATIONS

● Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred.

● Prior employment and/or intern experience with transferable skills to that of an Executive Director preferred.

● Demonstrate commitment and passion for social, economic, and racial justice.

● Ability to interact professionally with elected officials, school administrators, donors, board members, leaders of ally organizations, and the press.

● Experience with and desire to work with diverse cultures, and the ability to engage people from a variety of backgrounds.

● Strong written and verbal skills including group presentations and public speaking.

● Flexibility to travel throughout region, state, and nation.

● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Drive.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

● Valid drivers’ license and dependable access to a car to drive for work required.

WORK SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

● This position has flexible hours and may often include evening and weekend work.

● Salary: $20/hr. starting at 20 hrs/wk. Hours may increase depending on funding and progress of the campaign.
