The Catering Service Assistant Supervisor, under the direction and supervision of the Catering Service Supervisor, assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Catering Service Supervisor in his/her absence. This position is responsible for planning, directing, and leading the service of catered events as assigned, ensuring that high professional standards are demonstrated in areas such as dining room set-up and service, customer service, quality control, sanitation, food presentation, and supervision and training of service personnel.
Positions are 10-month appointments, with summers and academic breaks off unless work is available. Catering employees must be available to work evenings and weekends when events are scheduled.

Typical Essential Functions:
Assist in planning, service arrangements, food production, transportation, and cleanup for all catered events, in coordination with Catering Service Supervisor (includes full-service deliveries, and take-out)
Arrange complete dining service and room set-up as specified on Catering orders
Interview, select, train, schedule assign, evaluate, recommend wage increases and correct performance problems of student assistant; may serve on screening committees to assist in the selection of regular staff, direct student workers and regular employees as assigned; and ensure that safety and sanitation standards are observed
Relay a favorable image of Cal Poly to the customer by demonstrating a high degree of professionalism, technical skill, and customer relations
Communicate with other food service departments to ensure coordination and good working relationship
Maintain safe, clean, organized, and secure storage of Catering equipment and supplies.
Monitor inventories of service products and supplies in a variety of service locations including the President's kitchen, Alumni House, and Central Facility
Requisition and replace food and supplies
Perform other duties assigned by Catering Service Supervisor
Directly supervise assigned employees. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Corporation's policies and applicable laws and regulations
Supervise the daily activities of the department, including but not limited to, effective delegation of assignments, training and resources necessary to meet performance standards and assist employees in improving performance relevant to job requirements
Develop and implement an effective performance and department goals and objectives, provide performance evaluations, and implement appropriate counseling
Able to supervisor and develop good working relationships; understand and anticipate customer needs in providing professional service at catered events; work varied hour and day schedules in coordination with catered event needs.
Direct and monitor employees to ensure that they remain in compliance with policies and procedures
Subordinates may include: Student and Intermittent Employees
Minimum Qualifications:
Must have a high school degree or equivalent
Minimum of two years of food service experience, with a least two years supervisory experience
Ability to drive mini pick-up trucks with automatic transmission
Ability to use kitchen equipment including high-volume coffee brew machines
Ability to perform complex, highly responsible and confidential duties
Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
Skill in coordinating service for a number of catered events held simultaneously
Skill in the use of tact and diplomacy in all customer contacts
Work with minimum instruction and supervision; understand and carry out verbal and written directives; anticipate needs for future events, plan and carry out accordingly; manage time and meet multiple deadlines
Skill in training and directing service workers
Ability to prioritize, plan, organize, and meet time lines
Ability to lead others in managing tasks; train and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with others
Excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to interface with all levels of staff, Board of Directors, university community, including students, faculty and staff, and the public
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance
Possession of a valid California Driver's License and have a driving record acceptable to our insurance company underwriters
Become ServSafe certified within the first year of service and maintain certification as required
A background check is required for all regular benefited positions
The person holding this position is considered a Mandated Reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment
