COMPANY OVERVIEW:
AOSense, Inc. is the leading developer and manufacturer of innovative quantum technologies employing atom optics. Our devices use frequency-stabilized lasers and atoms in a vacuum cell to measure accelerations, rotations, magnetic fields, and time with unparalleled accuracy and stability. Our staff includes physicists and engineers with expertise covering a wide array of disciplines. Our teams are dynamic and fast paced since our hardware is cutting edge.
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a hands-on electrical engineer to design and implement control systems for fieldable atom optic (AO) accelerometers, gyroscopes, absolute gravimeters, gravity gradiometers, atomic frequency standards, and magnetometers. The control hardware for AO sensors spans a broad range of technologies including low-noise analog, low-jitter digital, embedded systems, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), rf/microwave, and high voltage. An ideal candidate will have an unusually broad background covering these diverse technologies. As Senior Electrical Engineer, you will work with scientists and engineers to define control system requirements and architectures, will oversee the fabrication and testing of AO sensor control hardware, and will support the completed hardware through the performance validation phase. You will help to guide the development of future generations of atomic devices as they transition from the laboratory into the field.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborate with physicists, instrument designers, and software/firmware engineers to specify sensor control requirements and make optimal trade-offs
Guide the definition of control architectures for sensors
Design new low-noise analog, digital, and rf/microwave electronics
Iterate existing electronics designs to adapt them for new operating conditions
Document new systems and boards with block diagrams, schematics, bills of material, cable drawings, test procedures, and theory of operation descriptions
Define and specify digital interfaces to FPGAs and microcontrollers
Conduct and participate in design reviews
Create schedules and budgets for control system development
Create work plans for electronics staff
Track progress of electronics staff relative to project schedules
Manage outsourced electronics development
Collaborate with software engineers on the development of firmware
Contribute to proposals for further sensor development and applications
REQUIREMENTS:
Experience selecting architectures for complex electronic instrumentation
Demonstrated expertise in low-noise analog circuit development
Deep understanding of noise sources in electronic systems
Ability to critically evaluate electronics designs spanning a broad range of technologies
Experience supervising and reviewing complex PCB layouts
Expertise defining test plans for control electronics
Demonstrated success in on-time and on-budget management of electronics development
Proficiency with EE CAD tools (e.g., OrCAD, PADS PCB, Altium, LTSpice, Mathcad, or MATLAB)
Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
Thorough operational knowledge of standard diagnostic equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers)
Applicants should thrive in a dynamic environment
U.S. Government contracts require applicants to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
DESIRED EXPERIENCE:
Experience with laser drivers, low-noise photodectors, proportional, integral, differential (PID) control circuits, and direct digital synthesizers (DDSs)
Expertise with low-phase noise rf sources and signal processing hardware
Successful implementation of FPGA-based real-time measurement systems
Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW control system implementations
Experience qualifying electronics for foreign markets
Successful management of software and firmware development
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Masters degree or doctorate in electrical engineering with 5 y related experience, or equivalent professional experience
