Summer Internship: Orthopedic Health (Oakland)

Vacancy expired!

The Jackson Orthopedic Foundation (JOF) Summer Intern Program takes place July 8 - August 16, 2019. Applications are due by June 1.

The 6-week program is designed to provide undergraduate college students with a clinical immersion experience in healthcare. It offers plentiful opportunities to explore career options while shadowing experienced providers as they treat patients. Whether you are interested in becoming a nurse, physician, physician assistant, or a physical or occupational therapist, you will have the opportunity to gain insight into the unique aspects of a variety of professional healthcare roles and inter-specialty collaboration.

Throughout the program, we emphasize musculoskeletal health, focusing on conditions affecting the bones, muscles and joints. Students learn basic anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and present case studies based on their shadowing experiences during weekly conferences with each other in guided, group-learning sessions. We encourage teamwork and professional collaboration among interns.

The program requires that prospective interns be available three days each week (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) throughout the duration of the program. One day each week (most likely Monday) will be devoted to a weekly conference day, and the other two days will be spent shadowing clinical preceptors in their work environments. We aim to be flexible with interns' summer school and work commitments so that students are able to get the most from this unique opportunity while maintaining ongoing commitments outside the program.

Successful applicants to the JOF Summer Intern Program will have completed one year of college education prior to the start of this year's program. They should be able to demonstrate an active interest in the medical field and a common respect for humanity through ethical conduct.

Competitive applicants will be asked to attend an in-person interview 3-4 weeks before the start of the program. We will do our best to accommodate school and work schedules for our prospective interns.

The cost of the 6-week program is $500, which is payable upon selection as an intern. Applicants may apply for a progam scholarship based on financial need.
