ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY – TRUST AND ESTATE LITIGATION
Job Title:
Associate Attorney
Location:
Oakland, California
Job Type:
Full Time
About Us:
Small, reputable, growing law practice seeks an associate attorney. We handle trust and estate litigation, some TE administration, and TE-related practice areas (e.g. partition actions, elder abuse restraining orders, financial elder abuse). We don’t currently do estate planning. Over time we will allow attorneys to develop their planning practices according to their interests—albeit while mocking them because planning is boring and litigation is fun.
We provide top-notch legal representation to clients who we genuinely care about. We do so while balancing the seriousness of what lawyers do with the with humanity and humor of life—i.e. we spend our days mixing oil and water. But it’s always while adhering to the fundamental belief that the lives and needs of our clients, and our team, cannot be fully understood or appreciated if they are only viewed through the prism of the law.
The firm fosters a genuinely collaborative, growth-oriented, and emotionally aware environment. We want what is best for our clients and our people. The position has a low billables requirement coupled with a scheduled bonus structure. If you make this a lifestyle gig you won’t get side-eye from management. But if you put in the hours then your pay will show it.
Job Summary:
We seek a highly motivated associate attorney with 0–5 years of experience. More is fine. Candidates must: (1) show a demonstrated interest in TE law; (2) be smart and precise as hell; (3) be unafraid of appropriate creativity; and (4) demonstrate these things through A+ writing skills. Ideally you will possess a strong background in TE law and the ability to manage cases with minimal supervision. We are open to training the right people.
The firm has offices in Oakland. Three days per week in-office, two remote. Greater remote time is a possibility once you’ve demonstrated your ability to handle it.
Responsibilities:
Handle all aspects of litigation, i.e.:
o Research case-specific issues, draft high-quality analyses, and devise strategies with clear goals in mind.
o Draft and argue pleadings and motions.
o Prepare and respond to written discovery.
o Take and defend depositions.
o Skillfully handle court appearances, settlement negotiations, and mediations.
o Prepare for and conduct trial.
o Communicate effectively with clients and everyone else.
o Treat opposing counsel and co-workers with professionalism and respect. Toxicity is not welcome, whether internal or external to the firm. We’re here to resolve drama, not create it.
Qualifications:
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
Active membership in the California State Bar, in good standing. (We will consider those who have passed the Bar but have not yet been admitted.)
0-5 or more years of experience. The more the better.
Meticulous attention to detail.
Ability to flawlessly manage deadlines and cases.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a supportive environment, while handling work that is often demanding.
