We’re up to big things at SLO Classical Academy! You’ll find us off the beaten path, providing classical education and enrichment (with a twist) for preschoolers through high schoolers. Our purpose is to educate for life, understanding that education is not a means to an end, but a worthy end in and of itself.
Our community is growing! In addition to our school, we also have a thrift store, Fred & Betty’s, and an online educational service, Wisdom Wonder Project. We are looking for someone to join our executive leadership team to help lead and collaboratively navigate the many joys and challenges of leading three non-profits and to help us reach even more stability and dynamism in the future.

ESSENTIAL ROLES The Director of Business Life is responsible for the health and flourishing of daily operations, staff recruitment + care, and the development and building of SLOCA’s business-related activities—all of which undergird our vibrant community, education, mission and vision that is SLO Classical Academy. The goal of the Director of Business position is to secure the functionality of business to drive extensive and sustainable growth.
SHARED ROLES The Director of Business will serve on the executive leadership team, which is responsible for leading the community in mission and vision fulfillment, the thriving of SLOCA’s community and culture.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES There are four core competencies essential to the Director of Business Life role, and solid, demonstrated experience and aptitude in all three should be present with all applicants. They are as follows:
1. Business development: must be able to develop new and improve existing business plans while honoring the defined mission and vision.
2. Institutional leadership: must be able to lead with a servant-leadership mindset. Must be able to coach, develop and generate new leadership within the organization.
3. Strategic mindset: must think creatively yet sustainably and be willing to make and support difficult decisions for the good of the organization.
4. Team-player: Must be adept at working within a collaborative, team-based culture. Must be flexible in playing various team roles, including support, participant and leader. Demonstrated emotional IQ to discern what is needed when is essential.
More specifically, we are looking for individuals with the following qualifications:
15 + years demonstrated experience in business and related functions
10+ years demonstrated experience in management/leadership
5+ years experience in staffing or human resources desired
Demonstrated professional behavior and personal character
A willingness to support and uphold the school’s unique makeup as non-sectarian and accessible to families from various backgrounds and beliefs
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership, culture + care: work with our team to identify, assess and creatively plan for meeting the ongoing needs of our growing organization and its people, work on culture development and care for our community’s stakeholders.
Business oversight + health: participate in big picture business development, leadership, decisions and strategy, oversee and develop current business managers and some program managers, including our Athletics Director, Director of HR and Care, thrift store manager, school store manager, and Director of Marketing and Merchandising
Financial oversight: Work with Executive and Visionary Director to oversee and develop effective and healthy yearly budgets, oversee accountant and financials processes, participate in expansion activities (investments, acquisitions, corporate alliances etc.)
Oversight of daily operations related to HR, Office & customer service, facility & safety and laws, rules and regulations.
